Now that Capcom has officially announced that Resident Evil Veronica is in development, fans are eager to learn what updates the developers plan to make. The original Code Veronica, which is over 25 years old, was highly praised when it first launched on the Dreamcast, but it has since fallen into relative obscurity within the fan community due to its placement in the series’ overall storyline.
Although Code Veronica is a mainline entry, its lack of a numbered title makes it somewhat of an exception among its series counterparts. Additionally, its story centers around Claire Redfield. While she’s a well-liked character, her role is mostly limited to Resident Evil 2, Code Veronica, and some spin-off titles like Resident Evil Revelations 2, as well as films.
Capcom is evidently aware that the original Code Veronica feels somewhat disconnected from the franchise’s ongoing narrative. In a recent Q&A with PlayStation LifeStyle during last week’s Summer Game Fest, series producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi shed some light on the changes coming to the remake.
“First, we remade Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4. Now, we’re working on Veronica, and the story will continue into Resident Evil 7, 8, and 9. We’re making some adjustments to Veronica to create more continuity within the larger Resident Evil universe,” he explained.
Interestingly, Hirabayashi didn’t mention Resident Evil 5 or 6 during the discussion. This might be because Resident Evil Requiem’s portrayal of Oswell Spencer diverges from his depiction in Resident Evil 5’s DLC, and Resident Evil 6’s storyline is notably confusing.
Details about how much the story of Resident Evil Veronica will Change remain unclear, but with a release scheduled for next year, fans won’t have to wait long to see what new elements will be introduced.
