Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Naval Convoys can be tough at first because you have to fight multiple ships at once. Since these convoys are common in the game and are a good way to earn ship upgrades and Reales from Captain’s Lockboxes, it’s important to know the best way to handle them. Below, I’ve explained how these convoys work so you can sail the seas confidently.
To complete a convoy event, your goal is to board and take control of the lead ship—the biggest one at the front. The lead ship usually has at least two smaller escort ships nearby, which don’t need to be destroyed, but it’s often better to sink them to make the fight easier.
To board the main ship, you need to damage it until it gets stuck, then sail the Jackdaw alongside and press the button prompt (hold Triangle on PlayStation or Y on Xbox) to start boarding. After boarding, focus on lowering the enemy crew’s morale by killing enemies, climbing the main mast and cutting the flag, or destroying gunpowder stores on deck—just be careful not to blow yourself up.
Once morale drops completely, the enemy crew will surrender. At that point, you can choose to loot the Captain’s Lockbox for extra rewards, repair the Jackdaw’s health, send the ship to Kenway’s Fleet for resource gathering, or lower your Wanted Level to avoid pirate hunters.
Here are some tips for making convoy battles easier:
– Upgrade your Jackdaw regularly. Improving the ship’s cannons, mortar, and hull makes a big difference, especially early on when the Jackdaw can feel too weak for multiple enemies. Visiting Harbourmasters often is a good way to get these upgrades.
– Target the smaller escort ships first. These are easier to take out with mortar shots, and destroying them early prevents them from damaging your ship during the fight.
– Consider boarding the escort ships. This can give you more loot, opportunity to repair your ship, or reduce your Wanted Level—whichever best suits your style. Repairs are especially helpful to keep the Jackdaw in fighting shape.
– When preparing to board, use the swivel guns on either side of the Jackdaw to shoot at any red barrels or enemies on the ships. Landing hits can reduce morale before your actual boarding.
– If you don’t want to fight, you can cut the flag on the main mast to lower enemy morale without entering combat. Just watch out for snipers and avoid falling off while climbing.
– Remember to hold the brace button (Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox) during cannon fire to reduce damage from enemy shots. Upgrading the officer ability “Perfect Brace” makes this even better, letting you minimize damage when you time your defense right before volleys.
As you upgrade your crew and ship, convoy battles become easier. These fights also provide a good source of Reales and other resources, some of which can be traded for treasure maps to find hidden loot across the Caribbean.
