Commander Breakdown
The commander for this deck is Rootha, Mastering the Moment. She is an Orc Sorcerer who, at the start of combat, creates a red/blue elemental with flying and haste. Its power and toughness are equal to the highest mana cost of a spell (instant or sorcery) you cast during your first main phase.
Rootha only displays red and blue mana symbols, so the deck must include only red, blue, or hybrid mana cards. For example, if you cast a 12-mana Volcanic Salvo during your first main phase, Rootha will create a 12/12 elemental token with flying and haste. Opponents will need to be ready for sudden large attacks whenever Rootha is on the battlefield.
Deck Theme & Strategy
This deck revolves around casting spells early to trigger Rootha’s ability, then either protecting your tokens or flooding the board with elemental creatures to maximize damage. Cards like Goldspan Dragon help generate treasure tokens, ensuring you have enough mana to cast expensive spells and summon formidable elemental tokens.
The game plan involves repeatedly casting spells during your first main phase to grow your elemental army quickly while using treasures to manage mana costs, thus maintaining a relentless attack.
Suggested Upgrades
Since the full list isn’t finalized, we won’t recommend removing any cards but will suggest some thematically fitting and synergistic additions.
-
Vivi Ornitier: This strong card from the Final Fantasy set fits well with the deck’s spell-casting theme. It adds red and blue mana equal to its power and gains a +1/+1 counter when you cast a noncreature spell, helping it grow while fueling your spells.
-
Twinflame Travelers: An elemental from Lorwyn, this creature triggers the abilities of other elementals an extra time. Pairing it with powerful elemental creatures can double their effectiveness.
-
Galvanic Iteration: A two-mana instant that copies your next spell and allows you to choose new targets. Its flashback ability lets you cast it again from the graveyard for three mana before exiling it.
-
Sorcerer Class: An enchantment that helps with card draw and mana generation. When it levels up, it allows you to tap creatures for red or blue mana or deal damage based on the number of spells cast that turn, increasing your damage output during combat.
Note: This deck emphasizes casting spells early, activating Rootha, and then maintaining pressure by either protecting elemental tokens or flooding the field with additional creatures. With cards like Goldspan Dragon to generate treasures, you’ll have the resources to keep your spells and constructs flowing, making for a dynamic and high-impact gameplay style.
