The U.S. military announced Saturday that it has conducted a new series of strikes against Iran following Tehran’s explicit attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes began at 7:15 p.m. Washington time (23:15 GMT), directly targeting forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after they attacked a Cyprus-flagged vessel navigating the narrow waterway, according to U.S. Central Command.
Centcom stated, “The United States is making Iran pay a heavy price by continuing to diminish their ability to threaten civilian mariners and commercial ships passing through the strait.” These military actions were carried out under the orders of President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards declared that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed “until further notice.” Reports indicate that the Guards had fired warning shots at a vessel using an unauthorized route. This escalation complicates ongoing efforts to negotiate with Iran, especially after recent exchanges of military actions. A major obstacle to a comprehensive agreement remains the control of the Strait—Tehran insists it will oversee shipping through the waterway, while Washington demands freedom of navigation without restrictions.
