A recent report indicates that one of the biggest upcoming titles for the PS5 might arrive sooner than originally expected.
During Sony’s State of Play event, Santa Monica Studio revealed God of War Laufey, the latest installment in the God of War series. The reveal provided nearly 20 minutes of gameplay footage and visuals but didn’t include a specific release date for this highly anticipated PS5 exclusive.
Despite the lack of an official release window, there are signs that Laufey could launch earlier than anticipated. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, speaking on Bluesky, mentioned several Sony titles, clarifying not to read too much into the absence of a release date for Laufey. He stressed that the game isn’t “years away.” When asked if that implied a potential release in 2028, Schreier firmly responded, “definitely not.”
From these clues, it appears that Laufey may be targeting a 2027 launch. Interestingly, this lines up with earlier insights from industry insider NateTheHate, who predicted that a new God of War—featuring Faye as the main character—was in development and set to be announced this year, with a release sometime in the first half of 2027, assuming no delays.
While an official release date has yet to be announced, all signs point toward a relatively quick launch. The predecessor, God of War Ragnarök, was released in 2022, and Santa Monica Studio was reportedly working on Laufey by that time, making a 2027 arrival plausible.
