PlayStation is providing PS5 and PS4 users with a free multiplayer weekend this week amid significant backlash following recent developments. From Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5, all players can enjoy online multiplayer on any game without needing a PS Plus subscription.
Sony’s free multiplayer weekend isn’t sitting well with many, especially since it was announced before the company revealed plans for a digital-only future. The timing has fueled criticism, with many fans expressing their frustration on social media. One user pointed out, “Online is always free on PC,” while another sarcastically remarked, “Oh wow, thanks for letting me play online for free games I’ve already paid for.” Others questioned the value, saying there’s little point to purchasing anything if players don’t own the titles and they could be removed at any time.
To be fair, free multiplayer weekends aren’t new for Sony, and this isn’t an attempt to placate critics. Still, the timing feels unfortunate. Meanwhile, Sony has gone quiet on social media following the backlash, only posting updates about the July lineup for PlayStation Plus Essential on its official blog. Notably, the company has not shared any new posts on Twitter or other platforms since the announcement, leading some to wonder if there might be a reconsideration in the works.
