China’s internet regulatory authority has approved the deployment of artificial intelligence services on iPhones in mainland China, allowing the tech giant to introduce its new AI system on its devices there. The system, called Apple Intelligence, is designed to provide personalized assistance with writing, self-expression, and everyday tasks, and was officially cleared for release on July 8. Despite the approval, the launch date remains subject to final regulatory confirmation, according to the company’s Chinese website. A “Ready for Apple Intelligence” label has been added to all iPhone model pages, indicating preparedness for the rollout.
The company has not yet provided details about the official launch schedule for Apple Intelligence or the AI-powered Siri in China. Additionally, specifics about the features tailored for Chinese users have not been disclosed.
Support from a major local partner, a leading technology firm, explains that its Qwen model will be integrated into Apple Intelligence to enhance the user experience across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS. This integration aims to enable functions such as text and image understanding and content creation directly on Apple devices, reducing the need to switch between apps.
This move reflects Apple’s strategy to improve user engagement in China through AI capabilities and enhance the competitiveness of its flagship devices. A fully operational Apple Intelligence holds significant strategic importance for the company and its local partner, especially amidst the growing trend of Chinese brands embedding AI features rapidly into their products. Falling behind in AI offerings could negatively impact Apple’s future sales in the Chinese market, where innovation is highly valued.
Meanwhile, the local partner is enthusiastic about leveraging Apple’s vast user base to accelerate the deployment of its Qwen AI model. Launching on iPhones will serve as a strong validation of its technological capabilities and open new avenues for commercialization, boosting the company’s AI ambitions.
