A fire at a building housing a library and coaching center for college students in Lucknow has resulted in at least 14 fatalities, according to authorities. The blaze erupted on Monday from the middle floor of a three-story commercial structure situated in a residential neighborhood and rapidly spread to other floors.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak confirmed that 14 children from families with stable backgrounds lost their lives, with four additional individuals injured. It remains unclear if all victims were students. Witnesses reported that several students jumped from the upper levels of the building onto the streets to escape the flames. Images broadcast on Indian television showed the fire visible from the building’s front facade as firefighters battled to contain it.
The building was used as a coaching center for college-bound students, featuring a library and a computer graphics section. Fires are relatively common in India due to limited firefighting resources and lax safety enforcement. Electrical short circuits, often caused by poorly maintained wiring, are a leading cause of such incidents.
Pathak assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy, stating that each affected family would receive over $2,100 in relief aid.
The cause of this recent fire—coming about two weeks after a hotel blaze in New Delhi that resulted in 21 deaths—has yet to be determined. Past incidents include a March fire at a government hospital in eastern India, which claimed ten lives, and a 2019 fire in Delhi’s old quarter that killed 43 factory workers sleeping inside a building.
