Two people were injured in critical condition, according to police reports. Authorities are currently examining camera footage, and victims have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
At least a dozen individuals sustained injuries on Saturday in Toledo, Ohio, when two shooters exchanged gunfire. Police confirmed that two of the injured are in serious condition, with victims’ ages ranging from 14 to 61 years old.
The shooting involved a confrontation between two individuals firing at each other. Lieutenant Dan Gerken remarked, “I’ve been to many scenes, but this one is beyond anything I’ve seen.”
A search for suspects continues as investigations remain active. Deputy Chief Joseph Heffernan indicated that authorities have gathered some evidence and are pursuing multiple leads. Investigators are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage, while George Kral, Toledo’s Director of Public Safety, urged the public to provide cellphone videos that could assist in solving the case, stating, “I know there is information out there. Please help us help you.”
The incident was reported around 5:37 p.m. after a shot was fired near the Old West End Festival. The police department shared on Facebook that many of the victims have been transported to local medical facilities for treatment.
Kral noted that several hundred people attended the event. “This is one of Toledo’s most iconic festivals, and it’s heartbreaking that something like this has marred it,” he added.
Aside from this incident, the Gun Violence Archive reports that there have been 171 mass shootings across the U.S. so far this year. The organization defines a mass shooting as an incident where at least four people are injured by gunfire, excluding the shooter.
