A Look at U.S. Presidents Who Faced Impeachment

1. Andrew Johnson: The First U.S. President Impeached
In 1868, Andrew Johnson became the first sitting U.S. president to face impeachment. His tenure was marred by conflicts with Congress, especially regarding reconstruction policies after the Civil War. Johnson was charged with violation of the Tenure of Office Act, which aimed to restrict the president’s power to remove certain officeholders without Senate approval. Despite being impeached by the House of Representatives, Johnson was narrowly acquitted by the Senate and remained in office. Interestingly, Johnson is still the only American president to face impeachment and not be removed from office.
2. Bill Clinton: The Second President to Be Impeached
Fast forward to 1998, Bill Clinton’s presidency was rocked by a scandal that led to his impeachment. The charges stemmed from his extramarital affair with Monica Lewinsky and allegations of perjury and obstruction of justice. The House of Representatives approved two articles of impeachment — perjury before a grand jury and obstruction of justice. However, the Senate ultimately acquitted Clinton, allowing him to finish his term. His impeachment remains one of the most widely debated events in recent presidential history, highlighting the intense partisan divide in American politics.
3. Donald Trump: The First President to Be Impeached Twice
Donald Trump made history as the first U.S. president to be impeached two times during his tenure. His first impeachment occurred in 2019 on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The controversy centered around allegations that Trump solicited foreign interference in the 2020 election. The Senate acquitted him in 2020.
Trump’s second impeachment came in January 2021, following the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. The House charged him with incitement of insurrection. While the House swiftly voted to impeach, the Senate again acquitted Trump in February 2021, but the proceedings marked a significant moment in American history. Despite facing impeachment twice, Trump was never removed from office.
4. Current Status of Presidential Impeachments
As of 2025, out of the 46 Presidents in U.S. history, only three have faced impeachment proceedings. No president has been removed from office through impeachment, underscoring the high bar for removal and bipartisan resistance to such actions. The impeachment process remains a contentious and complex safeguard in American democracy, often reflecting the prevailing political climate.
Additional Facts and Figures:
- Total U.S. Presidents: 46
- Presidents Impeached: 3 (including Trump twice)

Impeachment has remained a rare and dramatic event in U.S. history, often driven by political conflicts that transcend party lines. While presidents have been impeached, the ultimate test — their removal from office — has thus far eluded any sitting president.
