You need sharp eyes to spot the Sandspears in Subnautica 2. These strong creatures can be big and dangerous, capable of causing serious damage with just one bite. However, they tend to hide underground until you’re very close to them, making them tricky to find.
To unlock all the Biomods in Subnautica 2, you’ll have to get close enough to scan one of these aggressive fish. Here’s where they usually hang out and how to safely scan a Sandspear without risking your life.
Where to find Sandspears in Subnautica 2
You can find Sandspears near your lifepod and around the Observatory. They mostly bury themselves almost entirely under the sand, so keep an eye out for a blue antenna sticking out of the ground, topped with sharp teeth, as shown in the picture above.
Warning: If you get too close, this ominous sign will spring a Sandspear out of the ground, biting you and dealing heavy damage. It’s a good idea to carry some medkits to heal any injuries while you’re searching.
Good spots to look for Sandspears:
- Swim about 65 meters from the lifepod at a direction of 250° southwest, and at a depth of around 25 meters.
- Move 110 meters from the lifepod heading 60° northeast, or
- Swim 140 meters east from the lifepod at 90°, staying at about 20 meters deep.
Generally, these fish are spotted along the ocean surface in the same areas around the lifepod and near the Observatory. They aren’t found in the Alien Ruins zone.
Once you locate one, your goal is to scan it to unlock two new Biomods. Next, learn how to get close enough to do that safely.
How to scan Sandspears in Subnautica 2
To scan the Sandspear, first get close enough to hit it with your Feedback or Sonic Resonator. This will push the creature out of the sand temporarily. When it’s momentarily passive, you can use your scanner to analyze it.
Be aware: if you get too close, the Sandspear might attack, but even then, it’ll usually revert to a passive state before hiding again. During that window, you can scan it safely. The key point is that Sandspears only attack when you invade their space, so they’re mainly defensive.
Remember, to unlock the Biomod, you need to scan the Sandspear with a Subnautica 2 Bioscanner, not a regular scanner.
