Mortal Shell 2 revolves heavily around Shells. These mortal shells are what shape the game’s core. As the Harbinger, you’ll step inside these shells, gaining their unique abilities learned during their lives.
There are nine Shells confirmed so far in Mortal Shell 2, a big upgrade from the original game. Some of these shells are familiar characters from the first game. Each Shell comes with its own special skill and primary weapon. Knowing what each one does and where you can find them is important. Expect to see the word “Shell” quite often as I walk you through all the shells and their powers in this game.
Here are the four Shells confirmed at this point, with five more expected before the full launch:
– Harros, the Vassal (only in the opening part)
– Tiel, the Acolyte
– Eredrim, the Venerable
– Proxima, the Broodseeker
Harros, returning from the first game, serves as the tutorial Shell. You can’t use him after the prologue, but he still plays an important role, especially when facing the Tar Golem in the game.
Once you find the other shells, you can equip them. Tiel, for example, is the first available. He’s a thief whose special ability, Shadow Strike, puts him in the Shadow state. This allows him to pass through objects, dodge attacks, and strike unexpectedly with his dagger.
You can upgrade Shell powers and attacks at the Marrow Keep. Talk to Zhirelle, the Shellkeeper, to learn about each Shell’s past, explore their abilities, and improve them via a bonding system. Unlocking these upgrades helps strengthen your Shells.
While each Shell has unique abilities and weapons, there are also cross-compatible items like Seals and Tarstones. Equipping the right ones can make a big difference, so choose wisely.
In total, the full game is expected to have nine Shells, including the ones seen in previews like Harros and Tiel. Other characters have appeared in trailers, but we don’t yet know who they are — one may look similar to Mortal Shell’s Sester Genessa.
A Steam infographic also indicates that Solomon, a Shell from the first game, will not return in the sequel. Others from the original may not make it back either.
Outside of the beta characters Harros and Tiel, only Eredrim and Proxima have been officially confirmed, with Proxima being the newest revealed. More Shells are on the way, so stay tuned for updates.
