Meta announced that hundreds of millions of WhatsApp users will soon be able to use unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers. The update aims to enhance privacy by eliminating the automatic sharing of phone numbers, such as when joining large group chats or messaging new contacts. Users will need to know your exact username to contact you, as there will be no directory browsing or suggestions. With over three billion users, some might not get their preferred handle right away. The rollout of username reservations will begin gradually across the globe over the next few months, with users in each country being notified when the feature becomes available. Additionally, creators, small businesses, and organizations will be permitted to claim WhatsApp usernames already linked to their Facebook or Instagram accounts.
