Meta-owned WhatsApp has recently introduced a new setup screen feature exclusively for Android users. Currently in limited beta testing, this update will be available only on Android tablets.
According to a report from WABetaInfo, the new feature gives users the option to set their device as either the primary or a secondary device. This allows beta testers to operate WhatsApp in both companion and standalone modes.
When opening WhatsApp on an Android device for the first time, users will encounter a new interface titled “Choose an option.” They will be prompted with two choices: to link the device to an existing account or to transfer their account to the tablet.
For those selecting the transfer option, the process begins with entering their country code and phone number. A six-digit verification code will then be sent to confirm their identity. Once entered, the tablet becomes the primary device for their WhatsApp account.
Chat history transfers are straightforward, with users able to restore previous conversations from Google Drive to their new tablet. Importantly, once an Android tablet is set as a primary device, users experience the same functionalities as on a phone. No features are restricted, and the 14-day logout period does not apply to primary devices.
