President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that the U.S. military secretly facilitated the passage of over 100 million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran had largely sealed off in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli attacks.
“In the past month, I directed our great U.S. military to carry out a covert operation supporting oil tankers and commercial vessels navigating through the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform, asserting that the U.S. “exercises control” over the body of water.
He added, “Today, I am proud to report that this effort has enabled more than 100 million barrels of oil to flow into the open market,” noting that over 200 commercial ships have successfully passed through.
The U.S. launched a military operation called Project Freedom in early May to escort ships through the strait but abandoned it after just one day, claiming it was part of an effort to bring an end to the Middle East conflict initiated by Washington and Israel on February 28.
Later in May, U.S. media reports suggested the operation had resumed, but Central Command, which oversees U.S. forces in the region, denied these claims, stating that reports of resumed escort missions were false.
