Keir Starmer was once viewed as the leader who could bring practicality and stability to Britain after years of political upheaval. However, his departure on Monday was driven by his own lack of ideological conviction—something that initially helped him rise to power.

After leading the Labour Party to a historic parliamentary majority in 2024, Starmer prioritized achievable goals over articulating a comprehensive vision for Britain’s future. This approach led many voters and party members to perceive him as lacking passion and clear purpose, with over two dozen insiders noting he lacked a unifying idea or clear direction.

Without a guiding principle, as one senior Labour lawmaker described it, the former lawyer faced internal factional struggles, was lobbied by special interests, and misunderstood by a suspicious electorate. Many grew to dislike his perceived indecisiveness and mechanical debating style.

Turning more often to his wife Victoria for sound advice, Starmer’s policies frequently unraveled, leading to resignations and dismissals within his team. His remaining trusted aides struggled to craft a compelling narrative about his government’s plans to transform Britain.

On May 12, just days after poor local election results and calls for him to step down, he had a lengthy lunch with Victoria, emerging determined to continue fighting. Yet a weekend retreat with her at the prime minister’s country residence in Chequers appeared to shift his outlook, ultimately convincing him to step aside and resign.

Outside 10 Downing Street, he pledged to facilitate an orderly transfer of power to the next Labour leader, widely expected to be his rival Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester. “The question now is whether I am best suited to lead us into the next general election,” he said emotionally, his voice trembling as he thanked his family for their support. “The parliamentary party has spoken, and I accept that answer graciously.”

Support for him waned rapidly as voters grew frustrated over broken promises and flip-flopping policies. Even some of his closest cabinet allies privately urged him to step down calmly rather than risk a damaging leadership contest.

His promise to fight for his premiership dissolved once most within the party decided they couldn’t face running the 2029 general election under his leadership. After winning a seat decisively in northwestern England, Burnham gained momentum, being seen as the “Reform slayer”—the politician with a real shot at keeping Nigel Farage’s populist party at bay.

Fear of Farage’s influence fueled efforts to oust Starmer, with lawmaker Catherine West revealing she went public during the weekend of May 9-10 to push for a leadership challenge, driven by a desire to prevent Farage’s resurgence.

Starmer’s political journey began in 2015 when he entered Parliament at age 52. He became leader five years later, inheriting a party devastated by its poorest election showing since 1935 under Jeremy Corbyn—marked by accusations of antisemitism and Brexit confusion.

Drawing on his experience as head of the Crown Prosecution Service, he aimed to modernize Labour and boost its electability. As DPP, he tackled factionalism, cleaned up the party’s finances, recruited top lawmakers, and focused on issues relevant to Britain.

When he announced his resignation following Burnham’s recent electoral victory at 10 Downing Street, Starmer emphasized his commitment to a smooth transition. “The decision my party faces now is whether I remain the best person to lead into the next election,” he said, voice breaking as he expressed gratitude to his family.

His tenure was marred by unfulfilled promises and policy reversals that hampered public trust. He struggled to define a clear agenda, often falling short on key issues like housing, economic growth, immigration, and healthcare reform. Gaffes involving donations and controversial appointments, such as Peter Mandelson’s links to Jeffrey Epstein, further damaged his credibility.

His efforts at international diplomacy saw some success, notably in aiding Ukraine’s defense and engaging with European allies on security issues. Relations with the U.S. also fluctuated, with former President Trump criticizing him over his stance on Iran and immigration, even predicting his resignation on social media.

Perhaps his most notable legacy is the fragmentation of Britain’s traditional two-party system. Local and national elections in England, Scotland, and Wales reflected a significant shift, with small parties like Reform gaining substantial ground—more than 270,000 new members and a challenge to Labour’s dominance. Starmer’s belief that this emerging threat would rally support ultimately proved incorrect; he lost the fight against Reform and the changing political landscape.
