Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced it will cease manufacturing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, signifying a significant move toward a fully digital distribution approach. After that date, all upcoming PlayStation titles will be exclusively available in digital format through the PlayStation Store and authorized retailers. This change does not impact titles already released or those scheduled for physical disc release before the deadline. Sony states that this decision reflects evolving consumer behaviors and industry-wide trends where digital downloads have overtaken physical copies. The company describes this shift as a natural progression, aiming to better align its business with modern gaming access methods. The move will enable Sony to allocate more resources to enhancing game accessibility and expanding purchasing options across both digital storefronts and retail outlets. Despite moving away from physical media, Sony reaffirmed its commitment to providing high-quality gaming experiences and thanked its PlayStation community for their ongoing support.
