Senator Lindsey Graham passed away Saturday evening after experiencing a sudden illness, according to a statement from his office’s communications director shared early Sunday on X. The 71-year-old South Carolina Republican was a well-known figure in Congress. Initially a critic of then-President Donald Trump, Graham later became one of his staunchest supporters on Capitol Hill.
His family has requested prayers and privacy during this difficult time, the statement added.
Graham was elected to the Senate in 2002. Prior to that, he served in the House of Representatives, representing South Carolina’s third district since 1994, according to his official biography.
Known for his strong defense stance, Graham consistently championed policies aimed at safeguarding national security, particularly in the context of the War on Terror. Recently, he held the position of chair of the Senate Budget Committee and was a member of key panels including the Appropriations Committee, the Judiciary Committee, and the Environment and Public Works Committee.
He was unmarried and resided in Seneca, South Carolina.
