A passenger bus in Algeria crashed into a ravine on Friday, resulting in at least 25 fatalities and injuring dozens more, according to the civil defense agency. The bus went off the road near Boumerdes, a coastal town east of Algiers, for reasons that remain unclear. Authorities reported that 44 people sustained injuries, and the death toll might rise. Emergency teams responded around 9:40 a.m. local time (0840 GMT) to assist victims—the deadliest accident in Algeria in recent years.
In comparable incidents, last August, a bus fell into a ravine near Algiers, killing 18. In December, 14 people died when their bus overturned in Bechar, located in the southern part of the country. Algerian road safety officials attribute most crashes to human factors like speeding. In 2025, traffic accidents resulted in 3,838 deaths and over 37,000 injuries nationwide.
