SEOUL: The Chinese AI service, DeepSeek, returned to South Korean app stores on Monday, marking its first availability in nearly two months after downloads were halted due to data protection violations.

On Thursday, South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission stated that DeepSeek had shared user data and queries without consent when it launched in South Korea back in January.

Download capabilities were paused in February amid concerns regarding the handling of personal information, but users can now access the app again through various platforms, including Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store.

In its updated privacy policy featured within the app, DeepSeek affirmed its commitment to processing personal data in accordance with Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act.

The service also clarified that users may opt out of allowing the transfer of personal data to several companies situated in both China and the United States.

DeepSeek has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this matter as of Monday.

The data protection agency remarked that DeepSeek voluntarily chose to reinstate its app downloads after making adjustments to align with at least some of their recommendations.
