Binge eating disorder is among the most prevalent eating disorders globally, yet many individuals have limited understanding of it.
This condition involves repeated episodes of consuming abnormally large amounts of food in a short period, often accompanied by a feeling of being unable to control or stop eating.
Following these episodes, feelings of guilt, shame, sadness, or distress are common. Unlike some other eating disorders, binge eating typically isn’t followed by behaviors such as vomiting or excessive exercise.
The disorder can have serious impacts on physical health, mental well-being, relationships, and overall quality of life. It is associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart problems, anxiety, and depression. Despite affecting over 17 million people worldwide, treatment options remain limited, and currently, there are no medications specifically approved for binge eating disorder.
Research led by scientists at University College London (UCL) suggests that certain medications already widely used for obesity and type 2 diabetes might offer new treatment possibilities. Published in eClinicalMedicine, the study reviews evidence on GLP-1 receptor agonists, including semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide.
These medications are known for their ability to promote weight loss by suppressing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness. They also help regulate blood glucose levels. Researchers have wondered if these effects could benefit individuals dealing with binge eating.
To explore this, the UCL team conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, aggregating data from 25 randomized controlled trials across 12 countries on four continents. The studies involved a total of 8,069 participants, making this the largest review to date examining these drugs and binge eating symptoms.
Results showed that participants taking GLP-1 medications generally experienced fewer binge episodes, reduced emotional eating, and less frequent feelings of losing control over food.
Interestingly, these benefits went beyond just weight loss. The medications may influence brain regions involved in hunger, reward, cravings, and impulse control, while also slowing stomach emptying and increasing sensations of fullness.
The review also indicated that individuals reported higher levels of dietary restraint, indicating more conscious efforts to control food intake.
However, the researchers highlighted the need to determine whether this leads to healthy self-control or potentially fosters unhealthy restrictive eating patterns. More carefully designed studies are necessary to clarify this.
Experts with firsthand experience of binge eating emphasized that medication alone is unlikely to lead to lasting recovery. They underscored the importance of psychological therapies, supportive relationships, and efforts to reduce social stigma around body weight and eating disorders.
The authors acknowledged several limitations, including funding from pharmaceutical companies for many of the included trials and a high risk of bias in some studies. Additionally, only a small portion of participants had a confirmed diagnosis of binge eating disorder, making it unclear how applicable the findings are to those receiving specialized treatment.
Further large-scale, independent clinical trials with longer follow-up periods are essential before these medications can be broadly recommended for binge eating disorder. Future research should include more individuals with confirmed diagnoses and assess whether improvements persist over many months or years.
