Despite affecting over 17 million people worldwide, treatment options remain limited, and currently, there are no medications specifically approved for binge eating disorder.

    Research led by scientists at University College London (UCL) suggests that certain medications already widely used for obesity and type 2 diabetes might offer new treatment possibilities. Published in eClinicalMedicine, the study reviews evidence on GLP-1 receptor agonists, including semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide.

    The researchers tracked 23 adults aged 55 and older over a year. Of these, 12 individuals exhibited biological signs associated with Alzheimer’s, while 11 did not.     Findings revealed that BCG altered the activity of immune cells near the brain. These cells became more responsive to new stimuli, suggesting that the vaccine trained the immune system to respond more effectively. Crucially, this enhanced immune activity did not cause harmful inflammation, which is known to contribute to brain damage and neurodegenerative processes.

    The team also measured levels of amyloid-beta, a protein strongly linked to Alzheimer’s. In participants without existing Alzheimer’s-related brain changes, amyloid levels dropped in cerebrospinal fluid but increased in the blood, indicating that the protein might have been cleared more efficiently from the brain. However, individuals already showing signs of Alzheimer’s pathology did not experience these changes, implying that the vaccine may be most effective before the disease takes hold.

    Senior researcher Dr. Steven Arnold noted that the study’s outcomes back the theory that the immune system and brain are more interconnected than previously thought. Future research aims to determine whether BCG can help maintain brain health early on and prevent disease development.

The other woman experienced overwhelming emotions during her session, describing it as mental torture, and her depression persisted or worsened afterward.

    This stark contrast led researchers to ask whether medical professionals can predict who will benefit from psychedelic therapy before treatment begins. To explore this, they surveyed 158 therapists worldwide, some practicing within authorized clinical trials, others working in unregulated underground settings. Data collected included patient personality traits, mental health history, therapy environments, support systems, preparation, supervision, and follow-up care.

    Several patterns emerged: patients with stable lifestyles and strong social support systems were more likely to experience positive outcomes, possibly because emotional backing helps process difficult experiences during treatment. Personality traits also played a role, with better results seen in individuals who were emotionally open, curious about new experiences, and capable of accepting uncomfortable feelings instead of resisting them. Prior experience with meditation, controlled breathing, or other altered states of consciousness appeared beneficial, easing fear of unusual mental experiences during sessions. Conversely, ongoing substance use such as cocaine, amphetamines, alcohol, or cannabis correlated with less favorable results.

    The study also warned that certain personality types might face higher risks. Patients displaying paranoid, schizoid, or schizotypal traits might experience increased confusion, fear, or emotional instability during altered states, highlighting the need for caution.

    Findings underscore the complexity of psychedelic therapy, emphasizing that success depends not only on the drug but also on the environment, emotional readiness, therapist guidance, and post-treatment support. This holistic approach, often called “set and setting,” reflects how a patient’s mindset, expectations, surroundings, and therapist relationship can shape their experience.

    Pre-treatment, it’s recommended that patients build trust with their therapists, openly discuss their goals, fears, and expectations. After sessions, ongoing follow-up helps patients process and integrate their experiences effectively.

    The study also raised concerns about unregulated psychedelic treatments outside formal medical settings. While underground therapists sometimes report more optimistic results, experts stress that strict safety standards and scientific oversight are essential for patient safety.

    However, a recent study published on March 18 in JAMA Psychiatry suggests that psychedelics may not be more effective than standard antidepressant medications when evaluated under fair conditions. Depression, or major depressive disorder, is a severe mental health issue affecting millions worldwide. It often results in prolonged feelings of sadness, a loss of interest, low energy levels, and difficulties functioning daily.

    While antidepressants are a common treatment, they don’t work for everyone. That has led researchers to seek alternative options. Psychedelic therapy differs from conventional medication in that it generally involves taking a psychedelic drug in a controlled environment with support from trained therapists. Many patients report intense emotional or spiritual experiences, which they believe help them process difficult thoughts and feelings.

    Studying these therapies scientifically presents challenges. Clinical trials typically compare a treatment to a placebo—a substance with no active effects. Ideally, neither participants nor researchers know who receives the real treatment versus the placebo, a process called “blinding,” to eliminate bias. Because psychedelics produce noticeable effects, participants can often tell whether they’ve taken the active drug, which can influence outcomes based on their expectations.

    To address this problem, researchers from the University of California, San Francisco; UCLA; and Imperial College London developed a new approach.     Analyzing data from several studies, the researchers found unexpected results. When both treatments were evaluated under similar conditions, their effectiveness was nearly identical. Patients in both groups showed comparable improvements in depression symptoms, with an average reduction of about 12 points on a standard depression scale. This indicates that while both therapies can be helpful, neither clearly outperforms the other.

    This outcome surprised many researchers. Dr. Balázs Szigeti, one of the lead authors, anticipated that psychedelic therapy would yield stronger results. Instead, when evaluated more fairly, the previously noted advantages of psychedelic treatments diminished.

    The findings suggest that early studies may have overestimated psychedelics’ benefits because participants could often tell which treatment they received. Those who believed they received the real drug might have experienced a placebo effect driven by hope and expectation, while those aware they took a placebo may have felt disappointed. Traditional antidepressant trials tend to show smaller differences between drug and placebo because participants’ expectations are less certain, which actually helps balance the “expectation effect” across treatment types.

    While this does not imply that psychedelic therapy is ineffective, it does indicate that its benefits may not exceed those of existing treatments. One limitation of the study is that it compared results from different trials rather than testing both treatment types head-to-head within the same experiment. More direct research is needed to confirm these findings.

    Ultimately, the study highlights the importance of rigorous testing for new treatments.
