Alfonso Waller, a cardiologist at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, stresses that heart risk develops from a combination of factors. Some, like age and family history, are beyond individual control, while others can be managed or modified.

Known risks include smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, excess weight, and inadequate physical activity. High blood pressure is particularly significant because it can quietly increase the heart’s workload and damage arteries over time. When multiple risk factors are present, the overall danger escalates.

However, heart health isn’t solely determined by internal factors. Growing research indicates that a person’s environment and economic situation significantly influence cardiovascular risk. Women also face awareness challenges. Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality for women, yet many are unaware of its seriousness. Symptoms can include chest discomfort, but women may also experience shortness of breath, nausea, or unusual fatigue.

Making positive lifestyle changes can significantly impact even when risks are present. Regular exercise improves heart and vessel efficiency and can help regulate blood pressure and weight. Eating healthfully supports better cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

Stress management is equally important, since chronic stress can influence the body directly and alter daily habits. Persistent stress might lead to poor sleep, reduced exercise, or increased reliance on unhealthy foods, smoking, or alcohol—all of which elevate cardiovascular risk over time.

For many, the simplest first step is knowing their blood pressure and cholesterol readings. A routine checkup can reveal hidden problems that might otherwise go unnoticed.

If someone already has high blood pressure or heart disease, lifestyle adjustments alone may not suffice. Medications can be essential for controlling these conditions, tailored to the individual’s needs. Diet and exercise complement medical treatments but should not replace them.

An important aspect of current health research emphasizes prevention at multiple levels. It recognizes that heart disease is influenced by personal habits, health conditions, genetics, and environment. This comprehensive approach facilitates the development of more effective and equitable prevention strategies.

That said, large-scale studies reveal overall patterns but cannot predict an individual’s future risk with certainty, especially since social influences are complex and interwoven. Data on group differences should guide efforts to improve prevention and healthcare access, not stereotype individuals within those groups.

The core message is simple: heart disease often develops long before it shows symptoms. Regularly checking blood pressure and cholesterol can uncover hidden risks early, providing opportunities for intervention. Effective prevention relies on personal steps combined with broader efforts to promote healthy foods, safe environments for physical activity, and accessible medical care for everyone.
