An upcoming PS5 action-adventure game announced earlier this month might never see its release. Ninja Theory revealed “Senua,” the third installment in the Hellblade series, during the Xbox Showcase on June 7. However, new reports suggest that Microsoft had already decided prior to the event to either sell off Ninja Theory or, in the worst case, shut it down altogether.
This information comes from reputable journalist Stephen Totilo, who noted that multiple outlets, including Bloomberg, have reported that Xbox is heading toward significant layoffs and studio closures. Studios like Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games, and Double Fine are reportedly at risk unless they can secure financial independence or find a buyer.
Totilo mentions that Microsoft had already made up its mind about Ninja Theory, and the reason the studio was permitted to showcase Senua was to attract potential buyers. “The idea was that announcing a new game would entice investors,” he revealed, citing sources familiar with the situation.
Whether Ninja Theory can achieve independence or find an interested purchaser remains uncertain. If efforts to save the studio fall short, the saga of Senua could come to an abrupt end even before it begins.
