Tyler Treese: Dead or Alive 6 has had quite a lengthy lifecycle. Not many studios have the opportunity to enhance and fine-tune a game seven years after its release. What has been the most rewarding part of revisiting and improving everything for Last Round?
Yosuke Hayashi: When Dead or Alive 6 launched, it was already a high-quality title with impressive graphics and character models. With this update, we’ve polished it further to run smoothly on the latest hardware. We’re excited to see players experience it in a comfortable, visually enhanced environment.
We also introduced the new Oboro lighting system. We’ve seen how great it looks in Lost Paradise, and more stages will adopt this system over time. It’s thrilling to see familiar stages transformed into visually stunning, natural-looking environments thanks to Oboro.
This upgrade improves natural expressions, like how light reflects, creates shadows, and produces reflections and natural lighting effects. It allows us to craft environments that are more photorealistic and meet current visual standards. I believe players will notice a completely new feel when battling in familiar stages with these enhancements.
Are there any PlayStation-exclusive features, like DualSense controller support or a PS5 Pro mode?
No, there aren’t.

Photo Mode was a highly requested feature, and it’s one players will love. What kinds of options will it offer?
The Dead or Alive series isn’t just about competitive fighting; aesthetics are a core part of the series. We aimed to develop an ultimate Photo Mode in fighting games, allowing players to freely craft scenes through camera angles, character motions, facial expressions, and even sweat effects. Since battles take place in various stage locations, any setting can be used for photos, especially with Oboro support, which enhances realism further.
Players can dress characters in their favorite costumes, set up battles across different stages, and capture that one perfect shot worth sharing with friends.
What gameplay improvements can fans expect with the new version?
The five DLC characters from Dead or Alive 6 will be available immediately in the standard edition of Last Round. This provides a great opportunity for new players and those who missed out on the original to enjoy these characters. Also, the game supports gameplay in 4K resolution for compatible systems, providing a more intense experience. When Oboro lighting is active in supported stages, graphics become even more photorealistic.
We also plan to continue supporting the game with post-launch DLC and updates. Our goal is to keep the Dead or Alive community engaged and excited with fresh content.
You can’t reveal too much about the new characters arriving after launch, but what is the team’s philosophy behind continuing to add new fighters to Last Round while developing a new game?
The Dead or Alive series had been quiet for a while, but we never intended to end it. We want to reignite enthusiasm with Dead or Alive 6 Last Round. To show our commitment, we’ve decided from the start to introduce a brand-new character to the roster—something we developed alongside the main game. We’re eager to share these new fighters with everyone and look forward to updates that will bring fresh excitement. Stay tuned for more!
Thanks to Yosuke Hayashi for sharing insights on Dead or Alive 6 Last Round.
