Christopher Judge’s portrayal of Kratos in God of War (2018) and Ragnarok is truly legendary, expected to be remembered for generations. His appearance in the upcoming God of War Laufey will likely be another memorable moment. Many fans hoped he would join Amazon Prime Video’s live-action God of War TV series as the Greek god. However, Judge has explained why he decided to pass on the role and focus solely on his performances in the video games.
Christopher Judge Declines God of War Live-Action Series Due to Physical Demands at Age 62
During a panel at Fan Expo Canada 2026, Judge shared with Collider that the idea of training intensely to portray Kratos in his 60s didn’t appeal to him. When asked about the TV series, he candidly said, “I didn’t want to do it.”
“I didn’t want to, at 62 years old, work 16 to 18-hour days. I didn’t want to be dieting constantly; I didn’t want to be working out all the time.”
Judge disclosed that he initially read for the role of Kratos and even had a heartfelt conversation with his grandson about possibly joining the project. Despite his enthusiasm, his body and mind ultimately said no.

“We had conversations, and I thought, ‘What a great legacy to leave for my grandson.’ So, I started working out, got stronger. But then, reality hit… because I did read for it! I found it increasingly difficult to memorize lines, which I’ve never struggled with before. That’s when my body and mind told me, ‘You don’t want to do this.’”
As the panel continued, Judge opened up about his role as Teal’c in Stargate SG-1. He concluded, “I was a lead in Stargate from ages 33 to 44, then stepped away. Now, at 62, as the lead again, I have no desire to live that intense a life again.”
While disappointed not to see Judge in the live-action Kratos role, he has given his blessing to Dave Bautista, who is set to take on the part. Fans miss Judge’s powerful voice and commanding presence, especially when he shouts “Boy!”
Fortunately, Santa Monica Studio head Cory Barlog confirmed at SDCC 2026 that more God of War games featuring Kratos are on the way. So, we can look forward to seeing Judge’s version of Kratos with the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos, wielding the iconic white ash and red tattoos in future titles.
