Thirty years after Quake revolutionized 3D graphics in first-person shooters, the legendary game is receiving an unexpected DLC. To honor its legacy, MachineGames and id Software are offering Quake fans a gift in the form of a brand-new episode. The best news is that it’s completely free for all players who own the base game on PS5 and PS4.
The expansion, titled Quake: Dawn of the Machine, features a 19-map campaign, a fresh soundtrack, and a new Deathmatch map. The idea for this content came from Andrew Yoder, Lead Level Designer at MachineGames, who pitched it to Game Director Jerk Gustafsson. Yoder explained, “We aimed to create something that captured the true spirit of the original: horror, action, and chaos!”

So, how can Quake fans get this free DLC for the popular PlayStation shooter? Those with the game on PS can simply launch Quake and navigate to Singleplayer > New Game > Episodes/Expansion. This applies to both current and new players.
The expansion introduces enemies redesigned from classics like Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, and Blood Shambler. Instead of a central hub, Dawn of the Machine allows players to keep moving forward without interruption. Players take on the role of Ranger, who is trying to escape a “phantasmagoric dimension where time loops back on itself.” As they try to break free from the cycle, they will eventually confront the Nightmare Machine, the entity controlling the dimension.
Christian Plogfors, who also handles level design at MachineGames, composed the soundtrack for Dawn of the Machine. He contributed to crafting two maps within the expansion.
Quake is available on both PS4 and PS5.
