Getting settled in Windrose takes some time, as you’ll need to prepare a lot before you can set sail and explore the seas. Even after that, you’ll spend time traveling between outposts and bases to transfer goods and deal with Blackbeard’s influence in the area.

When you’re at your base, you can focus on enjoying life’s simple pleasures, like cooking and farming. Here’s how the farming system works and how to start gardening to harvest fresh produce for your adventures. Plant now to avoid going hungry later!

How to Plant Crops

In the build menu, open the farming tab to see your available plants. Initially, you’ll be limited to shrubs and banana trees, but you can gather seeds from various plants you’ve encountered and grow almost anything you find.

Planting crops is straightforward: keep seeds at your base and choose a spot in the build menu to plant them. However, some crops, especially smaller ones like flax, require fertile soil and seedbeds to grow properly.

Larger plants such as bananas and shrubs don’t need seedbeds, but smaller plants need nutrient-rich soil and a secure spot for growth. Once planted, trees and other plants take about an hour to mature and start producing fruit. They will continue to grow even if you’re offline, so plan your farm accordingly.

How to Get Seeds

You can find seeds by exploring and collecting plants from the wild. When you destroy plants in the wilderness, there’s a chance they will drop seeds. Take these back to your base to plant them and establish your crop supply.

When you harvest mature crops, they often drop seeds, allowing you to reuse your initial investment continuously. Keeping a good stock of seeds is essential because they provide a nearly limitless supply of resources as you expand your farm, especially as you explore new areas rich in vital crops like corn and flax.

Where to Find Fertile Soil

Fertile soil can only be found outside of the Coastal Jungle area. You’ll need to progress through the early parts of the story before you can access it.

In the Foothills and Cursed Swamp regions, fertile soil appears in large deposits around smaller islands, similar to clay. Harvest this soil and bring it back to your base to set up new seedbeds and grow your farm.
