Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge May Feature Huge Camera Upgrade

This year, the trend in the smartphone market is leaning towards slimmer designs. Oppo is set to launch what will be the world’s thinnest foldable smartphone. Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air continues to swirl. Samsung has already taken the lead by showcasing its Galaxy S25 Edge in a live presentation.

Fortunately, it appears that the trade-offs typically associated with ultrathin devices may not be as significant as initially feared. According to a recent leak with confirmed hardware details, this sleek smartphone is expected to feature an impressive 200-megapixel rear camera.

This is particularly intriguing, as such high-megapixel camera sensors are usually reserved for the premium Galaxy S Ultra models. More than just a matter of value, packing a 200-megapixel sensor into the Galaxy S25 Edge represents a remarkable engineering achievement.

This news isn’t entirely surprising. Just a few months ago, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which also boasted a 200-megapixel camera despite being its thinnest foldable model to date.

Interestingly, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra sports a flat design also featuring a 200-megapixel camera, the Galaxy S25 Edge will include a camera island that is slightly raised, with the lenses protruding from that bump.

In another example of cutting-edge technology, Oppo is equipping its upcoming Find N5 with a triple-rear camera system that includes a periscope-style zoom lens, all while maintaining a thickness just over four millimeters when unfolded.

Currently, Samsung has not released additional details about the Galaxy S25 Edge beyond its hardware showcase during its Unpacked event. The latest leak indicates that the device will feature an armor aluminum frame and a display shielded by Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

The screen is expected to utilize Samsung’s adaptive refresh rate technology, which will allow it to adjust fluidity between 1 and 120Hz, aiming for a seamless and efficient visual experience. Additionally, a vapor chamber system is rumored to be included for effective heat management, and the battery will support 25W wired charging.

Given its sleek metal design and slim profile, it seems unlikely that wireless charging will be included; however, Oppo is introducing 50W wireless charging with its forthcoming Find N5 foldable, making it possible that Samsung might surprise us with similar capabilities.

On a related note, the Galaxy S25 Edge is not aimed at consumers looking for a budget-friendly device or a flagship that can blow competitors away with its specs. Instead, it serves as a testament to the innovations and engineering prowess within the smartphone industry. Thus, it’s wise to adjust expectations accordingly.

Before transitioning to One UI 7, it’s advisable to capture a screenshot of your current home screen layout. Some users have reported that upgrading may jostle your home screen settings significantly, akin to a scrambled Scrabble game. One UI 7 has altered its grid layout options, mainly to integrate the new Now Bar feature.

Unlike One UI 6, which allowed grid layouts of 4×5, 4×6, 5×5, and 5×6, the newer version only accommodates 4×6 and 5×6 layouts, as noted by Android Authority. If your home screen currently features an unsupported layout, expect a noticeable change post-upgrade, and you’ll need to decide how to reorganize your home screen thereafter.

The same principle applies if you’re migrating your data to a new device already running One UI 7, such as the Galaxy S25. Fortunately, there’s an alternative. The Good Lock app enables deeper customization of Samsung’s interface, and its Home Up module can create personalized grid layouts along with a DIY Home Screen feature.

While losing some layout choices may be a drawback, this is minor compared to the vast improvements that One UI 7 introduces. Its suite of AI capabilities, such as the Now Brief, Circle to Search, and Writing Assist, offers significant upgrades that enhance your device’s overall functionality.

Furthermore, the Now Bar feature resembles Apple’s Dynamic Island, providing quick access to essential information like navigation directions and real-time weather updates. Although One UI 7 introduces some changes, the enhancements it offers more than compensate for the limitations in layout options, especially considering the full customization available through the Home Up Module.

  • Samsung’s Teased Tri-Fold Phone Finally Has A Name

Samsung’s Teased Tri-Fold Phone Finally Has A Name

Months ago, rumors began circulating about Samsung’s yet-to-be-announced tri-fold smartphone, which could compete with the Huawei Mate XT. The buzz started when leaker Yeux1122 posted details on a South Korean social media platform. This same source has now resurfaced with a potential name for the device: the Samsung Galaxy G Fold. Additionally, the leaker indicates a possible launch timeframe of January 2026, drawing on insights from Ross Young, a supply chain analyst known for his accurate predictions. However, some reports suggest that the release could occur as early as late 2025.

According to Yeux1122’s blog on Naver, the Galaxy G Fold will measure approximately 9.96 inches in width and 6.54 inches in height. This model is expected to differ from existing smartphones by featuring a design that allows it to fold on both sides. The leaker noted, “Its weight is similar to the H, but it’s slightly thicker,” likely referring to the Huawei Mate XT, which weighs in at 298 grams (10.51 ounces) — significantly heavier than many flagship models like the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This additional weight may deter users if the overall build feels unwieldy.

The “G” in its name may signify its unique hinge design. The Galaxy G Fold could potentially be a double-folding phone, with the screen bending inward on both sides to safeguard it from scratches. This design would necessitate a secondary display on the back, resulting in a slightly bulkier device, although the difference in thickness would probably be minimal.

With few tri-fold phones on the market for comparison, the Huawei Mate XT launched with a hefty price tag of nearly $2,800. In contrast, the Galaxy S25 Ultra starts at around $1,300 for the most basic model. This suggests that the G Fold might easily exceed $2,000, presenting a significant challenge for Samsung. Consumer hesitation may stem from the high price of this innovative but still largely untested device.

Samsung’s Now Bar is an impressive tool that enables users to access notifications, play music, and much more right from the lock screen. With the upcoming One UI 7 release, this feature is set to include Google Maps integration. Currently, this functionality is available for the Galaxy S25 series, but it hasn’t been rolled out to the Galaxy S24 and older models yet.

The Google Maps functionality within One UI 7 has been activated with Google Maps version 25.04.01.717254420, as noted by tech tipster Tarun Vats. Users will now be able to view upcoming turns and other navigation prompts right on their lock screens, simplifying travel in new areas.

The Now Bar can be compared to Apple’s Dynamic Island feature, serving a similar purpose but positioned at the bottom of the lock screen instead of the top. Google has stated that One UI 7 will launch with this feature, likely following shortly after the Galaxy S25’s debut, although Samsung has yet to confirm a specific date for availability.

One UI 7 represents the next step in Samsung’s operating system, bringing new animations and a variety of other enhancements that improve the overall experience. After experiencing several delays and a lengthy beta testing period, the update is on the near horizon. Samsung has not specified an exact launch date, but a recent press release indicated that One UI 7 will be rolled out to all eligible devices by the end of the first quarter of 2025.

The deadline of March 31 is approaching faster than it may appear, so if you’re currently using an older Galaxy S device, hang tight; your update will be arriving soon.

While budget smartphones generally require less power to charge than their flagship siblings, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A56 is set to change that by delivering faster charging capabilities compared to the Galaxy S25, as confirmed by the FCC.

According to a report from GSMArena, a leaked FCC document reveals that the Galaxy A56 will support 45-watt charging. This is based on a screenshot showing the device is rated for 10 volts at 4.5 amps, which equates to 45W of charging power.

The inclusion of 45W charging for the Galaxy A56 is particularly noteworthy, given it shares a battery size of 5,000mAh with its predecessor, the Galaxy A55, which only supported 25W charging. In contrast, the base model of the Galaxy S25 provides 25W charging with a smaller 4,000mAh battery, whereas the S25 Plus and S25 Ultra models are expected to offer faster 45W charging with their 5,000mAh batteries.

Even with the A56’s enhanced charging capabilities, it’s important to note that having a higher wattage doesn’t always translate to significantly faster charging times. For example, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra charges fully in approximately one hour and five minutes, the Galaxy A55 takes about an hour and 25 minutes to achieve a full charge. Thus, the difference in charging time between the Galaxy A56 and the S25 models may be minimal, despite all supporting 45W capabilities.

The Galaxy S25 series is scheduled for a launch on February 7. Although Samsung has yet to confirm the Galaxy A56’s release, it is anticipated to debut sometime in the first half of the year, shortly following the flagship S-series launch.

Once you have unboxed and configured your Galaxy S25, you might notice that a familiar app, which was typically pre-installed on Samsung devices, is absent. Samsung has decided to discontinue the pre-installation of its Samsung Messages app, shifting all messaging responsibilities to Google. On the Galaxy S25, Google Messages is the only messaging application that comes pre-loaded and set as the default.

In a confirmation to Android Authority, Samsung elaborated:

“In partnership with Google, we have chosen to transition all messaging services to Google Messages and are phasing out Samsung Messages. Although it is not available on the Play Store, users who have previously used Samsung Messages will still have access. We believe that the enhanced RCS messaging capabilities of Google Messages will significantly improve the user experience for messaging between Android devices and across various platforms.”

    Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Your search for the Samsung Messages app in the Google Play Store will not yield any results. However, users can still download the app through Samsung’s Galaxy Store on the Galaxy S25. The Galaxy Store version received an update on January 15, accompanied by a warning about why users should stick with Google Messages instead.

    The update states:

“This version of Samsung Messages is a download-only app, featuring certain limitations. It lacks compatibility with Samsung Themes, does not support features released after One UI 6.1.1, and is unable to utilize RCS features in satellite mode.”

A person holding the Samsung Galaxy S25, showing the Samsung Messages app.
    Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The transition to Google Messages is not entirely unexpected. Last July, Samsung informed Galaxy users through its Samsung Members app that Samsung Messages would not come pre-loaded on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, with Google Messages being the alternative. This change was limited to specific regions, but for the Galaxy S25, it appears to be a standard practice across the board. Verizon also encouraged Galaxy owners to migrate to Google Messages after announcing that Samsung Messages would not support RCS messaging beginning in early 2025.

It remains to be seen whether Google Messages will replace Samsung Messages on other Galaxy devices with the launch of One UI 7. If you want to be proactive, Google Messages is already available for download on the Google Play Store.

  • Samsung’s XR Headset And Smart Glasses After Galaxy Unpacked 2025

Samsung’s XR Headset And Smart Glasses After Galaxy Unpacked 2025

During the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event, Samsung unveiled its upcoming XR headset named Project Moohan. Set to compete against Apple's Vision Pro, this new device promises a more affordable price point while maintaining cutting-edge technology. While details were limited, there is significant anticipation surrounding its release later this year.

Samsung has a rich background in XR technology, and with the support of two major industry partners, Project Moohan is expected to pose a serious challenge to competitors like Apple and Meta, creators of the Quest 3 headset.

    Samsung’s XR journey

Although it may appear that Samsung is hastily developing a headset to rival Apple's Vision Pro, the company has a history of VR advancement, starting with its GearVR system back in 2015. Fast forward to Galaxy Unpacked 2023, where Samsung first hinted at collaboration with Google and Qualcomm on its XR headset.

As 2024 approached, Google introduced Android XR, announcing that Samsung's Project Moohan would be the first headset compatible with this new software. Android XR is poised to support smart glasses as well, unlocking a myriad of possibilities for Samsung to incorporate AI and camera technology into future devices.

According to a report from The Verge, Samsung's CEO TM Roh has hinted that smart glasses are on the horizon. Although specific details remain scarce, there are two notable directions the company might pursue.

One possibility involves launching a competitor to Ray-Ban’s Meta Smart Glasses, potentially powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip. These smart glasses might leverage Google’s Gemini for multimodal input, employing the same camera for AI functionalities and hands-free photography or video recording.

A more ambitious direction could see Samsung develop smart glasses featuring a heads-up display, allowing users to check notifications, navigate directions, and receive AI-generated responses. While the market for affordable AR glasses is still developing, it is an exciting prospect that Samsung is entering the field to aid in this progression.

Although detailed information concerning XR initiatives was limited, the year ahead looks promising for AR and VR enthusiasts. For those interested, don’t forget to catch up on everything announced at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025 and learn how to reserve the cutting-edge Galaxy S25 Ultra.

  • Google Took Center Stage At Samsung Unpacked Event

Google Took Center Stage At Samsung Unpacked Event

During its first Unpacked event of the year, Samsung extensively highlighted the AI features driven by Gemini that will be integrated into their smartphones. My excitement was short-lived, however, when I read a press release from Google.

Among the two main features Samsung showcased, one is already being implemented on Pixels, while the other will soon be accessible on iPhones, Android devices, and desktop browsers.

Google has recently revealed a variety of updates for its Gemini assistant, propelling it further into the realm of agentic AI. A notable improvement is the addition of extensions that operate on an “@” system (similar to the one in Workspace) within chats, enabling users to perform tasks in associated applications.

Sending a message through Gemini on a smartphone.
    Google

For example, if I instruct Gemini to “Say hi to Christina @WhatsApp,” it will send a message directly through the app. With Google services, users can bypass the extensions since the AI will intuitively select the correct services like Messages or Maps.

Furthermore, Gemini can now leverage multiple extensions simultaneously within a single query. For instance, requesting “find me the nearest kebab house and send it to Drew” will efficiently utilize both Maps and Messages.

This new multi-extension feature is currently being rolled out to Pixel 9 series smartphones. If you own a Samsung Galaxy S25 series device, Gemini will also access data from Samsung’s own services, including Calendar and Notes.

Gemini executing a task across multiple services.
    Google

The conversational feature, Gemini Live, is also receiving a significant update. Previously limited to audio interactions, users can now incorporate images, YouTube videos, and local files into their conversations with Gemini Live. This enhancement was mainly restricted to text inputs or within the experimental NotebookLM tool.

This feature will be available on the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S25, and Google Pixel 9 series phones starting today.

    Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends

In the near future, features such as screen sharing and live streaming will also be integrated into Gemini, marking a significant step towards Google’s ambitious Project Astra system on smartphones.

Another noteworthy upgrade is the introduction of Deep Research in the mobile version of Gemini. This feature offers one of the most practical experiences, transforming the internet search process by presenting information exclusively from chosen sources.

Users won’t have to worry about misinformation or the added burden of verification, assuming they trust the sources being referenced. However, it’s important to remember that a Gemini Advanced subscription is necessary to access this feature.

    Samsung

At the Galaxy Unpacked event held in San Jose, California, Samsung unveiled its newest Galaxy S25 series. Among the highlights, the Korean tech giant dropped a major hint about a new device, the Galaxy S25 Edge, leaving spectators both in-person and online buzzing with excitement.

While Samsung kept the specifics of the new device under wraps, it did showcase various disassembled components on large screens throughout the venue. This teaser sparked intrigue among tech enthusiasts who are eager for more details. The last Edge model, the Galaxy S7 Edge, was released in 2016 and featured dual curved edges, a design that became quite popular in the smartphone market before Samsung moved to phase out the Edge branding the following year with the Galaxy S8 series. At that time, Samsung had begun exploring the potential of foldable screens, ultimately launching the original Galaxy Fold in 2019.

Looking back to 2014, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note Edge, a pioneering gadget that started the trend of curved screens. This model featured a single curved edge and allowed users to access their favorite apps by swiping the edge, earning it praise from many tech reviewers. It’s interesting to consider that Samsung may have used these early iterations to experiment with foldable technologies.

Subsequent devices like the Galaxy S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ arrived in 2015, introducing the dual-edge design that remained popular for many years. However, as the focus shifted towards foldable designs, there seemed to be no sign of a decline in Samsung fans’ appreciation for the brand’s distinctive curved screens, particularly in competition against Apple’s more traditional flat design.

Given the clues presented at the Galaxy Unpacked event, it seems Samsung is ready to revive the Edge design after a decade. The company has promised to reveal further details later this year, and anticipation is palpable among fans.

    Evan Blass / X

This event is expected to showcase a diverse array of new products, with the Galaxy S25 series taking center stage. We anticipate the launch of three new devices within the Galaxy S25 lineup: the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra. Additionally, a potential fourth device, possibly named the Galaxy S25 “Slim,” may make its debut.

The three main smartphones are likely to maintain a resemblance to the existing Galaxy S24 models, albeit with slimmer designs and a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. We also expect the unveiling of innovative AI features, along with at least one enhanced camera on the flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra.

If the Galaxy S25 Slim indeed arrives, it is anticipated to be considerably thinner than its counterparts, though information remains sparse. Its slim profile will likely be a key selling point as it competes against Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 “Air,” expected to launch in the fall. Besides fresh hardware, we anticipate the introduction of One UI 7, which has so far been available only as a beta version.

One UI 7 is set to bring a host of enhancements to the Samsung Android experience. Among the most notable updates is a redesigned home screen featuring simplified icons for a cleaner and more intuitive interface.

Additionally, the new "Now Bar" will provide users with quick access to personalized information, improving convenience by showcasing relevant updates such as calendar events, weather reports, and notifications without needing to navigate through various apps. This update will emphasize new AI capabilities within Galaxy devices, introducing an AI-driven personalized daily briefing to help users stay organized.

The camera application will also receive a significant overhaul, improving the user interface and introducing advanced features for photography. These upgrades are anticipated to include new shooting modes, enhanced editing options, and AI improvements for superior image quality and smart scene recognition. Overall, One UI 7 aims to elevate the user experience through personalization and cutting-edge technology.

Samsung's Bixby may also see an upgrade, enhancing its AI functionalities to align it more closely with platforms like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, following a 2024 update specifically tailored for the Chinese market that introduced localized Galaxy AI features.

Earlier this year, Samsung launched its first Galaxy Ring, a smart ring featuring health and wellness capabilities. The release was well-received, and enhancements are being continually added to the device. Currently, two new sizes—14 and 15—are set to be made available, expanding its accessibility across the globe.

Although a Galaxy Ring 2 announcement is possible at the upcoming event, it seems unlikely. The existing model will probably remain on the market until this summer or beyond before a new version is finally unveiled.

  • Samsung Set To Transform Smartwatch Battery Life In 2026

Samsung Set To Transform Smartwatch Battery Life In 2026

Rumors about Samsung’s development of a groundbreaking battery technology began circulating in late September and early October 2024. Recent reports from a Samsung subsidiary reveal that these innovative batteries are not only in the pipeline but also set to enter mass production by 2026.

The new batteries, which utilize an oxide-based design, boast a density of 200 watt-hours per liter, bringing them closer in performance to traditional lithium-ion batteries, as detailed in a report by the Korea Herald. Samsung aims for these solid-state oxide batteries to take the place of lithium batteries due to their enhanced safety, efficiency, and flexibility compared to current technologies.

The specific subsidiary involved in this development is Samsung Electro-Mechanics, a company that provides components and products to a diverse range of clients. At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, CEO Chang Duk-hyun noted that the company has conducted thorough internal testing and is actively engaging in discussions with potential clients. While the identities of these clients remain undisclosed, there are suggestions that major wearable technology companies, possibly including Apple, could also benefit from this advanced battery technology.

A person changing the watch face on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra.
    Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

If these reports prove accurate, the 2026 Samsung Galaxy Watch could significantly enhance battery life. Currently, some smartwatches boast impressive performance, such as the Garmin Instinct 3, which is said to last for 24 days, though this often relies on solar charging features. A true multiweek battery life lasting through medium to heavy usage would be a game changer for smartwatch enthusiasts.

It’s unclear whether this new battery technology will be extended to smartphones as well. While improving battery performance in wearables is critical, a sufficiently large capacity that can support a smartphone throughout an entire day, even under heavy usage conditions, would also represent a major advancement. Regardless, first movers in incorporating this technology into their wearables stand to gain a significant advantage.

New Samsung Galaxy S25 Images Show Two Key Features

The next Galaxy Unpacked event from Samsung is just one week away, where we anticipate the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S25 series. Despite the proximity of the event, leaks continue to surface, revealing intriguing details about the upgraded camera design and a sneak peek at One UI 7.

Renowned leaker Evan Blass has shared fresh images of the Galaxy S25 and S25 Plus in his latest newsletter. These visuals provide a detailed look at the forthcoming devices. Notably, the images highlight a striking dark blue color, which was already anticipated. What’s especially eye-catching is that the color also applies to the camera rings—something we haven’t seen in prior leaks, adding a delightful touch to the design.

Images of the Galaxy S25 Ultra also surfaced, displaying its more rounded corners, matching camera rings, and the S Pen. The photos reveal impressively thin bezels on the display, a feature that has consistently appeared in rumors leading up to the launch.

    Evan Blass

While these images focus predominantly on the hardware of the Galaxy S25 series, one of the most exciting aspects could be a new feature integrated into One UI 7.

The Galaxy S25 series is set to debut with Android 15 and One UI 7, which has already been in beta testing for Galaxy S24 users. This significant update to Samsung’s customized Android experience introduces various new features, including the “Now Bar,” which Samsung has highlighted in several promotional materials. Additionally, recent images hint at a feature called the “Now Brief,” teased by Samsung last month. This feature appears to function as an AI-driven summary, likely consolidating notifications and other critical alerts.

The wait is nearly over, as Samsung is scheduled to unveil the Galaxy S25 and One UI 7 on January 22.

Initially introduced by Samsung at CES 2020, Ballie seemed to vanish for a while, but it made a comeback with a revamped design at CES 2024. Now, at CES 2025, Samsung has announced that this charming robot is set for a retail release later this year. After a lengthy wait, it appears that Ballie is poised to become your next domestic companion, and we are thrilled about the smart home possibilities it presents.

Ballie is an innovative home robot that leverages AI technology extensively. Touted as an “autonomous, self-propelled home assistant,” it aims to enhance daily life through features that provide companionship, health tracking, and entertainment. It utilizes a built-in projector and speakers for communication, showcasing impressive functionality.

A Samsung demonstration highlighted Ballie’s ability to project information about local Las Vegas attractions onto the ground when prompted. The robot can cleverly redirect its projector to a blank wall for map directions, utilizing the larger space for a more detailed display.

Ballie projecting images onto a wall.
    Samsung

In addition to providing directions, Ballie can function as a projector for movies. It’s designed to adjust its screen size through voice commands. While its projection quality may not match dedicated home theaters, its versatility in projecting onto various surfaces, combined with capable speakers, makes it a useful addition to any household.

Ballie is also compatible with an array of smart devices, enabling you to control them using only your voice.

Samsung has infused Ballie with advanced visual AI capabilities, allowing it to respond to inquiries about its environment. During a CES demo, for example, a user asked Ballie which wine would best complement a meal while holding two bottles; the robot acted as a knowledgeable sommelier.

Unfortunately, no specific release date or pricing information was disclosed at CES 2025. Given that most household robots tend to cost over $1,000—such as the Enabot X, and Amazon’s Astro priced at $1,600—it’s reasonable to anticipate Ballie may fall into a similar price range. More details from Samsung are expected in the upcoming months.

Samsung Readies To Compete With Google Pixel 8a

Samsung is gearing up to unveil its Galaxy S25 smartphone series on January 22. Following this launch, the company is expected to introduce a new mid-range device aimed to rival the Google Pixel 8a.

As reported by Android Authority, the upcoming Galaxy A56 has received multiple certifications in China, signaling that its release in that market is on the horizon. These certifications have disclosed several official specs and images.

The leaked images indicate that the Galaxy A56 will incorporate a camera bar akin to that found on the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Furthermore, it will feature an LED flash positioned on the right side, along with the volume and power buttons organized in a “Key Island” design, reminiscent of the Galaxy A15, A25, and the existing A55 models.

Previous leaks suggest that the Galaxy A56 will be powered by the Exynos 1580 chipset and will feature a rear camera system consisting of a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide sensor, and a 5MP depth sensor, along with a robust 5,000mAh battery. Notably, the A56 is poised to support 45W fast charging, marking a first for Samsung’s Galaxy A series.

These enhancements are expected to make the Galaxy A56 a notable upgrade compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy A55, which debuted in March 2024 and received criticism for its awkward design, absence of wireless charging, and other shortcomings.

Much like the Galaxy S25 series—which includes the Galaxy S25, S25 Plus, and S25 Ultra—the Galaxy A56 is anticipated to launch with Android 15 and One UI 7.

Samsung is expected to reveal the Galaxy A56 in March.

If you’re interested in acquiring the Samsung Galaxy S25 but prefer not to pay the full price upfront, Samsung is reportedly considering a rental option for their upcoming models along with other Galaxy phones.

Details about this smartphone subscription service emerged during CES 2025. Samsung’s CEO, Han Jong-hee, announced that the company intends to roll out this service at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event within two weeks, based on information from ETNews. This service, tentatively named the “AI Subscription Club,” is set to launch in February, following its initial introduction in South Korea.

While “AI” appears to be a misinterpretation, the final name may not be confirmed yet. The planned subscription service would enable customers to pay a monthly fee for any phone, allowing them to trial it before committing to the total cost. The specifics regarding the monthly rates or the presence of tiered subscriptions—similar to popular streaming services—remain unclear. Additionally, this subscription model is expected to extend to tablets as well.

Samsung’s initiative resembles a previous attempt by Apple to create an iPhone hardware subscription system, which was pursued by the Apple Pay group since 2022 but was ultimately scrapped due to software difficulties and regulatory hurdles. Meanwhile, Google also had a subscription offering for Pixel phones known as Google Pixel Pass, but that service ended in 2023.

Introducing Samsung Vision AI: The Future of Television

    CES 2025 Coverage

During CES 2025 on Sunday, Samsung showcased its groundbreaking advancements in AI-driven display technologies. Dubbed Vision AI, this innovation aims to redefine televisions and other smart devices into interactive, intelligent companions.

The South Korean tech giant released a brief advertisement that envisions how Vision AI could significantly enhance the viewing experience for families at home. Check it out above.

At the core of Samsung Vision AI are an array of personalized features that aim to revolutionize user interaction with displays.

Below are some key features of Vision AI:

Click to Search provides instantaneous information about what’s displayed on screen—such as identifying an actor or exploring relevant content—without interrupting the viewing experience.

Live Translate harnesses an on-device AI translation model to remove language barriers through real-time subtitle translations, allowing viewers to seamlessly enjoy global content.

Generative Wallpaper transforms screens into dynamic, personalized art displays, enabling users to create visuals that reflect their preferences or special occasions.

Samsung Food identifies dishes appearing in the shows and movies you watch, even suggesting recipes for them. This feature connects to Samsung’s smart refrigerators to detect missing ingredients and offers to order them directly.

Samsung Vision AI also promises enhancements in both picture and sound quality. Utilizing on-device AI, the technology analyzes content and surrounding conditions in real time, making dynamic adjustments to visuals and audio for an elevated home theater experience.

According to Samsung, with Vision AI, “TV gets to know you.” The tagline suggests a highly personalized experience, encouraging users to explore new content, understand it in different ways, and unleash their creativity. “This isn’t just another TV; it’s an entirely new vision. Because the future of television isn’t just about what’s playing but about who’s watching.”

Interestingly, the advertisement hints that Vision AI might even figure out what the family pet enjoys watching—something we look forward to testing out as this cutting-edge technology becomes available in the coming months.
