Meta has launched its latest Muse Image AI generator across Instagram, Meta AI, and WhatsApp, enabling users to craft AI-generated images and enhance their Instagram Stories with new visual effects. The update introduces 30 fresh Story effects, including one that simulates the aesthetic of a disposable camera, while a redesigned image editor allows users to preview effects before applying them.
Privacy concerns have emerged with the rollout. Public Instagram profiles are automatically opted in to let Muse Image create AI images based on their publicly shared photos. Anyone can tag a public profile in a prompt and use Meta AI to generate images that feature that person’s likeness.
Users wishing to opt out can do so within Instagram’s settings. Simply open the app, navigate to Profile > Menu > Sharing and Reuse, and disable “Allow people to create with and reuse your content” for both posts and reels.
According to Instagram’s Help Center, users are not notified when their content is remixed with Meta AI. Disabling the feature does not remove AI-generated images already created from their content.
The feature has garnered criticism on social media, with many users objecting to the default enrollment of public accounts, raising concerns about privacy and the potential misuse of their images.
