Rust Sets New Player Count Record After 11 Years

Rust stands tall among multiplayer survival sandbox games, challenging players to navigate both each other and the unpredictable environment in what often feels like an unending whirlwind of chaos. Its popularity continues to soar, recently achieving a record high of 262,284 simultaneous users—a remarkable milestone occurring 11 years post-launch, largely driven by an upcoming update.

The forthcoming Primitive update will infuse the game with a touch of medieval influence. Conventional resources, such as firearms and ammo, will be scarce, compelling players to engage in close combat to express their frustration. Weapons like swords and crossbows will play a significant role in gameplay, alongside shields for defense. Players can also expect the inclusion of siege equipment like towers, battering rams, and ballistae to help them attack their opponents, as reported by PCGamesN.

Executive producer Alistair McFarlane posted on X to celebrate this record player count, stating, “For the past several months, we’ve been hitting new monthly records. This was a significant one—one we were unsure we’d ever surpass unless there was another global pandemic.” Previously, the record was set at 245,243 players back in 2021, making the game’s ever-increasing popularity a cause for excitement. He also shared a delightful YouTube video that serves as both a recap for 2024 and a celebration of the game’s 11th anniversary.

Further updates are on the horizon, which include a complete overhaul of the cooking system, the introduction of a new biome, and various adjustments to enhance gameplay. While there’s no confirmed release date for Cooking 2.0 yet, the Primitive update is scheduled to launch on February 6. For those impatient to try out the changes, Rust’s Staging Aux2 branch is currently available for public play.
