WeChat, the comprehensive app from Chinese tech and gaming giant Tencent, has begun testing its highly anticipated artificial intelligence assistant, which can operate mini programs to carry out a range of tasks. These include ordering food or taxis, purchasing movie tickets, reserving hotel rooms, tracking packages, and topping up phones.
The company has rolled out Xiaowei to a select group of users for preliminary testing, announced late yesterday. Users can interact with the AI either through text or voice commands. The assistant can be accessed via a robot eye icon in the upper left corner of the main screen or through the quick access options within the chat interface.
One tester evaluated Xiaowei’s photo editing capabilities and its ability to create a to-do list app with a single sentence, receiving prompt feedback. The tester also asked the AI to order a milk tea by providing details such as the shop name, product, sugar level, and temperature. Within around a minute, the assistant generated a link for the correct milk tea and sugar content, requiring only payment confirmation to complete the order.
Furthermore, the tester requested Xiaowei to summarize content related to an electronic component shared on WeChat, obtaining links and brief summaries of several articles in seconds. The AI was also asked to filter popular posts from that day, grouping them by categories like stocks and economics, society and people’s livelihood, as well as sports and entertainment. It could identify highly viewed articles, summarize the key points, and organize them accordingly.
Nonetheless, some functions are still limited; for instance, Xiaowei cannot yet schedule news updates at specific times daily or send messages on its own.
