A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner tipped onto its nose at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday, injuring several staff members, the German airline reported.
The incident happened at 12:45 p.m. (10:45 a.m. GMT), just before passengers started boarding the plane scheduled to fly to Los Angeles.
“While the aircraft was parked, the nose landing gear unexpectedly retracted,” a company spokesperson told AFP.
Both cabin crew and ground staff were aboard, with several hurt and receiving medical care. The airline did not specify the number or severity of injuries.
Lufthansa said it is “working with relevant authorities to determine the exact cause.”
Reports from Aerotelegraph indicate the airplane is only a year old, delivered to Lufthansa in January.
Later Thursday evening, another Lufthansa spokesperson told AFP that injuries, including two crew members, were minor.
The flight to Los Angeles was canceled.
The aircraft is expected to be towed to a hangar later Thursday for further inspection before repairs commence, Lufthansa added.
