GTA 6 Playtime May Surpass 80 Hours, Rockstar’s Rob Nelson Indicates

The extended preview of GTA 6 revealed numerous new details about Rockstar’s upcoming game, with one notable insight from Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North. Nelson shared that his last playthrough of GTA 6 lasted approximately 80 hours, primarily focusing on the storyline involving characters Jason and Lucia.

In an interview with The New York Times, Nelson explained that those 80 hours covered the main narrative along with some optional side missions that affected the story. Considering the variety of activities packed into GTA 6, it’s likely that players will spend over 80 hours exploring every corner of the map if they aim to see everything.

The GTA 6 world is said to be twice as large as GTA 5’s map and three times bigger than the territory in Red Dead Redemption 2, making thorough exploration a time-consuming endeavor. Nelson emphasizes that the team is adding much more depth and interactivity to the environment, which suggests players could easily lose themselves during multiple playthroughs.

He also mentioned, “I hope there are people who want to get up, have some coffee, shower, get dressed, go out for a little exercise, interact with others, explore, maybe get into some trouble—rob some places, make some money.” This highlights the game’s emphasis on a living, breathing world that encourages players to engage in numerous activities beyond just the main story.

Since Nelson referred to his experience as his last playthrough, meaning he has already completed the game once, it’s safe to assume that a first-time playthrough could easily surpass 100 hours in the sprawling city of Leonida and all its offerings.

The GTA 6 Extended Look offers just a sneak peek of what Rockstar’s next installment holds. Players will be able to team up with Jason and Lucia for heists, rob stores, enjoy mini-games, develop relationships between characters, work out using the new weight and muscle system, and much more—only scratching the surface of what the open world has in store.
