A highly anticipated PlayStation 5 RPG has garnered praise from critics, with some describing it as their “next gaming obsession.” Developed by Rebel Wolves and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, this open-world dark fantasy adventure is set to launch this week.

Rebel Wolves’ ambitious project, The Blood of Dawnwalker, has already begun generating positive buzz before its official release. Many reviewers are praising the game’s engaging gameplay and compelling storytelling.

Currently, The Blood of Dawnwalker holds a ‘Mighty’ rating on OpenCritic, with an average score of 84 out of 100 based on 59 reviews.

Tyler Treese from Comingsoon.net noted that despite some issues with animation quality, the game stands out as “one of the best releases of the year and your next gaming obsession.”

Salal Awan of Twisted Voxel praised the game for its “impressive debut, featuring compelling writing, meaningful day-night mechanics, and versatile combat.” Likewise, Luuc ten Velde from XGN.nl compared it to The Witcher 3, calling it a “fantastic open-world RPG with a sharply written story, memorable characters, and decisions with real impact.”

Steve Brieller of Cerealkillerz also drew parallels to The Witcher, highlighting top-notch voice acting and sound design that help create an atmosphere where players genuinely care about the characters and the world they explore.

Despite the early praise, The Blood of Dawnwalker isn’t without its rough edges. The animations are still a work in progress, but the developer has promised a frame rate patch at launch to improve performance. Some moments of character movement and traversal feel awkward, but these issues don’t overshadow the developer’s efforts to craft an immersive swordplay experience.

The game’s innovative systems and mechanics shine through. Combat relies heavily on direction-based inputs, where players hold the analog stick toward their attack target or block in the correct direction, making duels feel more visceral and engaging. Additionally, players can harness witchcraft to communicate with the dead and use plane shifting to walk on vertical surfaces. The story’s unique 30-day structure adds urgency, constantly reminding players to optimize their builds and focus on key objectives.

The Blood of Dawnwalker will launch on September 3, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
