Coal in Palworld isn’t as easy to find as you’d think. Players need to explore the desert and gather special items to mine it or farm it at their base. I recommend reaching at least level 15 before heading out for coal—going higher if possible—because the journey is tough. Make sure your pickaxe and hot weather clothes are ready, and follow these steps to farm coal effectively.
The best spot to gather coal is the Twilight Dunes, marked on the map above. But keep in mind, it’s a hot area, so you’ll need Tropical Armor to avoid damage from the heat. If you don’t have it yet, it’s better to wait before going there.
When you arrive, you’ll encounter plenty of level 15-20 enemies, and the area will be scaled to that level as you travel. If your character isn’t close to that level, you might find it hard to fend off enemies. You can try to avoid fights, but there are no nearby fast travel points—if you get knocked out, you’ll have to walk back from where you started.
Once you’re there and alive, you’ll see large black rocks that contain lots of coal. Use a metal pickaxe if you have one; it lasts longer than a stone one, but either works if you’re in a pinch. Mine all the coal you need and then return home to refine it into ingots or carbon fiber. If you have a Pal with Mining level 3, they can help break these rocks more easily.
Once you’ve gathered 100 coal, along with 70 stone and 30 Paldium Fragments, you can build a Coal Mine at your base. This allows you to produce coal steadily without having to go back to the desert every time.
If you want quick sources of coal, you can also get it by defeating or catching certain Pals. Keep an eye out for those that drop coal as loot or are easy to catch.
