Between the beginning of the year and now, approximately 32 fuel-powered vehicles in the Chinese market have experienced price reductions, with seven models seeing cuts last month alone.
The number of fuel cars that have had their prices lowered has increased by 13% in the first five months of the year compared to the same period last year. Last year, only two vehicles saw price drops during this time frame, according to the secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association.
Overall, the passenger car market saw a slight decrease in discounted vehicles, falling from 81 in the first five months of last year to 77 this year. Fuel-powered vehicles account for more than 40% of this total, underscoring their impact on overall market performance.
Additionally, the average price of a new fuel vehicle declined by 15% last month compared to the previous year, bringing the typical cost down to around 166,000 Chinese yuan (approximately $24,470). Similarly, the average price for a new passenger car dropped by 13%, settling at roughly 241,000 yuan.
The luxury vehicle segment was also affected, with discounts reaching as high as 25%. The BMW X2 experienced the most significant markdown, with its lowest listed price dropping to 248,000 yuan—down 22% from its lowest price in the past two years.
These price reductions are largely attributed to intense competition and a challenging market environment. Luxury brands are adjusting their original guide prices to safeguard the interests of both dealerships and consumers, which has kept actual transaction prices relatively steady, according to industry analysts.
