ISS Astronauts Have Front Row Seats to Comet’s Trip to Sun

Two NASA astronauts currently on the International Space Station (ISS) have been closely observing a comet that is making its way toward the sun, taking advantage of this celestial event to capture stunning images and videos.

Matthew Dominick and Don Pettit, both known for their incredible contributions to space photography, have been tracking comet C2023-A3, also referred to as Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, for about a week. They have been sharing their observations on social media platforms.

In a recent video shared on Wednesday that showcases the comet, Dominick commented, “The comet tail is noticeably longer each day. If you pause the video around the 15-second mark, you can see how the comet’s tail appears to bend. The atmosphere becomes denser as you approach Earth, and variations in its density alter the refractive index, causing the tail to appear bent.”

Dominick explained that the video is a time-lapse shot at eight frames per second. The images were taken with a 200mm lens at a 1/8-second exposure with about five minutes between each shot, resulting in a time-lapse that reflects the speed at which they see the comet from the window. The comet’s movement upward in the frame is a result of the ISS’s orbit around the Earth at a speed of 17,500 miles per hour.

Pettit expressed his excitement about witnessing the comet from orbit on his X account, noting, “It is truly awe-inspiring to see a comet from this perspective. Observing it from above the atmosphere offers a unique view. Although the comet’s tail is currently too faint to see with the naked eye, it is moving closer to the sun and getting brighter each day.”

The comet is also visible in the morning skies for those in Australia and New Zealand. If it continues to brighten in the upcoming days, it may become visible to a wider audience around the globe.

Dominick shared in a post how fortunate he and his fellow astronauts feel to witness such extraordinary occurrences from space, mentioning, “Recently, we reflected on how grateful we are to have experienced incredible auroras, a solar eclipse, and now a comet during our time on the ISS.”

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is anticipated to garner more visibility in the coming days, providing an exciting opportunity for skywatchers everywhere.

  • Weird Galaxy Could Help Astronomers Study Early Stars

Weird Galaxy Could Help Astronomers Study Early Stars

Astronomers utilizing the James Webb Space Telescope have discovered a peculiar galaxy that dates back just a billion years after the Big Bang. Its unique characteristics are aiding scientists in understanding the formation of early galaxies and moving towards one of the key quests in astronomy: uncovering the universe’s earliest stars.

The team employed Webb’s advanced instruments to analyze the light emitted by the GS-NDG-9422 galaxy across various wavelengths, revealing some intriguing results.

Lead researcher Alex Cameron from the University of Oxford remarked, “When I first examined the galaxy’s spectrum, my immediate reaction was ‘that’s unusual,’ which is precisely what the Webb telescope was developed to detect: entirely new phenomena from the early universe that will enhance our understanding of how the cosmic narrative began.”

The observations indicated that the galaxy’s gas was emitting light more intensely than its stars. This phenomenon is likely due to the stars being extraordinarily hot, which in turn heats the surrounding gas. While typically, large, hot stars reach temperatures between 40,000 to 50,000 degrees Celsius, the stars present in this galaxy were estimated to exceed 80,000 degrees Celsius.

This finding is already compelling, but its significance is amplified as it may offer insight into a class of ancient stars theorized to exist, referred to as Population III stars. Astronomers categorize star populations in reverse order: the stars that are currently forming are known as Population I, while older stars fall under Population II. Population III stars are presumed to be from the universe’s earliest epochs, yet direct evidence for their existence remains elusive.

It is believed that Population III stars would contain almost no heavy elements, as these elements were formed by supernova explosions long after the Big Bang. Therefore, their characteristics would diverge significantly from those of contemporary stars.

Harley Katz, another researcher, stated, “While we know this galaxy does not harbor Population III stars—due to its chemically complex data from Webb—its stars exhibit traits distinct from what we usually encounter. These exotic stars could serve as an important reference in comprehending the transition from primordial stars to the galaxies we recognize today.”

The team is now focused on discovering more of these unusual galaxies to expand their knowledge of how star formation occurred during the first billion years post-Big Bang.

Cameron expressed enthusiasm about the current period in astronomical research, noting, “It’s an exhilarating time to use the Webb telescope to investigate a previously unreachable era in the universe. We are just beginning a wave of new discoveries and insights.”

The findings of this research have been documented in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

SpaceX is recognizing its engineers as the company readies for its inaugural attempt to “catch” a first-stage Super Heavy booster upon its return to Earth.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the company shared two images that mimic the famous Lunch Atop a Skyscraper photograph taken in New York City in 1932. SpaceX noted that its engineers have dedicated “years” to preparing for this booster catch during the upcoming fifth test flight of Starship. The post also featured a visual of what the first-stage Super Heavy booster will look like when it is secured between the tower’s massive mechanical arms after launching the upper-stage Starship spacecraft into orbit.

SpaceX’s focus on reusing rocket components is central to its mission, as it significantly lowers the costs of space travel and enables a higher frequency of launches. The company has successfully reused the first stage and payload fairing of its mainstay Falcon 9 rocket, along with the more robust Falcon Heavy, which consists of three Falcon 9 boosters merged together.

The company is now advancing its development of the even more powerful Starship, which consists of the Super Heavy booster and the Starship spacecraft. Once thoroughly tested, both of these components are designed for reuse.

“Many people may not fully grasp how significant achieving complete reusability is,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated in a recent update on X.

He elaborated: “It stands as the holy grail of rocketry and is the essential breakthrough to make life multiplanetary. Starship is designed for full and rapid reusability — launch, land, refill propellant, and launch again immediately! This capability will permit a flight rate that far exceeds that of Falcon 9, which still requires a new upper stage for each mission. Falcon 9 launches occur every 2 to 3 days.”

SpaceX is poised to launch Starship on its fifth test flight from the Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. However, it awaits approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is not expected until late November, as the agency prepares a launch license for the company. There has been considerable frustration from SpaceX regarding the delay, but the FAA has indicated that the review will take longer than anticipated due to modifications made by SpaceX to the mission profile for the upcoming test.

Netflix’s Top Show Sparks A War Of Words What’s Going On

A battle of statements has erupted between the Menendez brothers and the actors from Ryan Murphy’s latest Netflix series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

This past weekend, Erik Menendez took to his wife Tammi Menendez’s X (formerly Twitter) account to express his discontent with the series.

“I believed we had moved beyond the lies and damaging character portrayals of Lyle, which have turned him into a caricature based on horrific and blatant falsehoods in this show. I can only conclude these were presented deliberately,” he stated. “It pains me to say that I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this unaware and inaccurate regarding the truth of our lives, implying there is ill intent behind these portrayals.”

    — Tammi Menendez (@TammiMenendez1) September 20, 2024

In response to Erik Menendez’s criticism, Ryan Murphy spoke with Entertainment Tonight and questioned why the incarcerated brother would release a statement “without having seen the show.”

“The interesting thing he does not mention in his statement is that if you watch the show, I’d estimate that around 60 to 65% of our scripts focus on the abuse and what they claim transpired,” Murphy explained. “We approach this very sensitively, allowing them to present their case and speak freely about it.”

One of the most contentious plotlines in Monsters features an inappropriate relationship between the two brothers, including a scene where they share an intimate moment in the shower. Murphy emphasized that the series is rooted in the perspectives and theories of those involved in the case, like journalist Dominick Dunne.

Nathan Lane, who portrays Dunne, suggested that Menendez should “probably see it” before voicing further opinions.

Cooper Koch, the actor playing Erik in the series, expressed understanding towards the real-life Erik, noting the challenge of reliving traumatic moments on-screen. “I empathize with him completely. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to have such a harrowing part of your life broadcasted for millions to witness. I get it,” Koch shared via Variety. “In preparing for this role, I focused on thorough research and self-reflection to portray him with integrity and authenticity, supporting both him and his family.”

Monsters has quickly become the most popular show on Netflix.

  • Backyard Baseball ’97 Returns Backyard Sports Next Month

Backyard Baseball ’97 Returns Backyard Sports Next Month

The highly anticipated comeback of the Backyard Sports series is just around the corner, as it has been announced that Backyard Baseball ’97 will be available on October 10.

In August, a new entity called Playground Productions surfaced, proclaiming ownership of Humongous Entertainment’s Backyard Sports game series, with plans to breathe new life into the franchise across various media including games, movies, and television. Although they hinted at future re-releases, specifics were sparse. Now, we finally have some clarity: the initial offering will be the revival of these classic sports games on Steam.

Backyard Baseball ’97 will launch on October 10 with a price tag of $10. This release is a faithful reproduction of the original game that initiated the Backyard Sports franchise. Notably, there are no real MLB players or teams; instead, players form teams with a diverse group of kids as they navigate through a season. Although the original source code was lost, Playground Productions collaborated with Mega Cat Studios to recreate the game by utilizing a CD-ROM version, effectively crafting a new build suitable for modern PCs.

A screenshot of Backyard Baseball 97.
    Playground Productions

I had the opportunity to test Backyard Baseball ’97 ahead of its release, and I found it to be a straightforward reboot of a classic kids’ game, which still manages to resonate with players today.

This title doesn’t come packed with many features commonly found in modern remasters, such as bonus content or special editions. Mega Cat Studios successfully revived the original game, ensuring it operates seamlessly on today’s PCs, much like it did back in 1999. Although some players might wish for significant updates or additional features that evolved in later installments, I value its straightforwardness, especially given the effort Mega Cat Studios invested in bringing it back.

Players now have an official way to buy and enjoy the game through a leading digital distribution platform, eliminating any technical issues commonly associated with emulation. Despite its simplicity, the original Backyard Baseball still stands strong. The distinct art style and animation in Backyard Baseball ’97 maintain their charm, and the diverse cast of characters available for team selection is delightful. The game is designed to be accessible with just a mouse, offering a lighthearted experience that teaches young players the fundamentals of baseball or gives adults a chance to unwind during busy days.

The Backyard Baseball series has always had a special appeal, and the release of Backyard Baseball ’97 on Steam reinforces that charm. If Playground Productions is serious about reviving this beloved franchise, making the original titles accessible on contemporary PCs is a smart leap forward, even if it lacks the polish typical of releases by companies like Digital Eclipse or Limited Run Games. Let’s hope that titles like Backyard Soccer, Backyard Football, Backyard Basketball, and Backyard Hockey will follow in the same spirit soon.

Mark your calendars: Backyard Baseball ’97 will hit Steam on October 10, priced at $10.

  • Shipments Rose 48% Despite Weak GPU Market

Shipments Rose 48% Despite Weak GPU Market

The discrete graphics card sector seems to be experiencing a lull with no fresh releases for quite some time. Yet, surprisingly, GPU shipments are performing better than anticipated. A recent report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) reveals that shipment numbers for add-in board (AIB) GPUs surged by an impressive 47.9% compared to last year. But what’s behind this growth? Let’s dive into the details.

First and foremost, the statistics are quite promising. Total GPU shipments jumped from 8.7 million units in the first quarter of 2024 to 9.5 million in the second quarter, reflecting a 9.4% increase. This is a significant deviation from the common trend, especially considering the 10-year average is a decline of 7.1%.

    AIB GPU market share.
    Jon Peddie Research

This kind of increase runs counter to typical market patterns. Generally, GPU shipments tend to decline in the first half of the year, but this year bucks that trend. It’s hard to overlook the impact of Nvidia’s RTX 40 Super release at the start of 2024. However, we must also consider the launches of new models like the RTX 4070 during the first half of 2023. Plus, both AMD and Nvidia introduced new GPUs in late 2022, contributing to the previous year’s first and second-quarter statistics. Whatever the reasons, the gains we’re seeing this year are certainly notable.

The GPU AIB market share over the years.
    Jon Peddie Research

When we look at manufacturer-specific data, it’s consistent with the overall near 50% year-on-year shipment increase. Nvidia continues to dominate the market, holding an impressive 88% share, reflecting a 61.9% rise in shipments compared to the previous year and a 9.7% increase from the last quarter. In contrast, AMD shows more modest growth with a 3% increase year-on-year and 9% from the previous quarter.

On the other hand, the situation for Intel appears grim. Intel held a mere 2% market share in the discrete GPU sector in the second quarter of 2023 due to its Arc Alchemist line, but this year shows 0% share. Significant changes are unlikely until Intel releases its Battlemage GPUs, which may arrive later this year or early next year—but those plans remain unconfirmed.

The GPU industry continues to exhibit unexpected developments. Given the rise of gaming laptops and the steady improvement of integrated graphics, a decline in shipments at the beginning of the year wouldn’t have been a surprise. While Nvidia’s RTX 40 Super has surely played a role in these favorable statistics, can it truly account for the nearly 48% gain? There is hope that this could signal a broader upward momentum, as Dr. Jon Peddie indicated, “After a typical dip in the first quarter, we’ve experienced four quarters of growth.” It should be noted, however, that overall shipments are down compared to two years ago, and it’s essential to remember that shipments do not equate to actual sales.

We are still anticipating updates regarding upcoming GPUs from AMD, Intel, and Nvidia, and once these releases hit the market, we can expect the graphics card landscape to thrive in the coming months.

  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Is Coming To PC

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Is Coming To PC

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered – Announce Trailer | PS5 & PC Games

On Tuesday, during the September State of Play event, PlayStation officially unveiled its latest remaster from the PS4 era: Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. This title is set to receive a significant upgrade for both PlayStation 5 and PC, slated for release on October 31.

While not an entirely new experience, the remaster boasts a substantial visual enhancement. A PlayStation representative shared that the graphics have been updated to align with the standards established by the sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. This includes revamped character models, updated textures, improved assets, and enhanced camera work.

In collaboration with Nixes, the team behind the remaster, Guerrilla Games has also incorporated 10 hours of new conversations with motion capture. As is standard with modern remasters, it will include support for 3D audio and utilize DualSense adaptive triggers, making it an ideal experience for PS5 users.

If you previously enjoyed the game on PS4, you can upgrade to the remastered edition for just $10, a great deal for existing owners.

Originally launched in 2017 exclusively for PS4 by Guerrilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn is an open-world action adventure that follows Aloy as she navigates a post-apocalyptic America. In a world where humanity has regressed into smaller tribes, players confront hostile robotic creatures. Aloy embarks on a journey away from her village to unravel the secrets behind the extinction of the previous civilization. Later that year, the game also received the Frozen Wilds story DLC.

Sony has maintained the momentum of the Horizon series by not only releasing sequels but also expanding its reach. In 2020, Horizon Zero Dawn made its way to PC, and a PS5 patch was issued the following year to unlock 60 frames per second. Additionally, a spin-off, Lego Horizon Adventures, has been announced for release in November.

The announcement of the remaster followed a leak last week when a rating appeared on the ESRB website, which confirmed information already known from the original Horizon Zero Dawn.

This remaster adds to the collection of PlayStation first-party titles making their way to PS5 and PC. Other notable projects include an Until Dawn remake launching this October and The Last of Us Part I, which was released in 2023. Sequentially, PlayStation has been transitioning its exclusive titles to PC after an initial window.

  • Planetary Defense Mission Prepares For Asteroid Encounter

Planetary Defense Mission Prepares For Asteroid Encounter

Solving Asteroid Mysteries | Hera Planetary Defence Mission

In the event that a massive asteroid is detected on a collision path with Earth, we currently possess a proven technology that, if advanced further, could potentially avert the catastrophic consequences of such an impact.

This method was initially tested by NASA two years ago during an attempt to redirect a harmless asteroid by colliding a spacecraft with it. The mission, known as the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), was successful in changing the trajectory of the Dimorphos asteroid, which is about 525 feet (approximately 160 meters) wide and orbits the larger Didymos asteroid.

Researchers are eager to understand in greater detail how the impact influenced Dimorphos. To this end, the European Space Agency (ESA) plans to send a spacecraft to meet up with the asteroid during the upcoming Hera mission.

Scheduled for launch next month, ESA has released a video that explains how the mission will unfold and its objectives.

The Hera mission’s goals include the following:

    • Gain insights into the exact mass and composition of Dimorphos
    • More accurately assess the impact’s effects on the asteroid
    • Determine whether an impact crater was formed or if Dimorphos fractured and is held together by its own weak gravitational pull
    • If there is a crater, measure its size

The spacecraft will carry out observations from a safe distance away from the asteroid and its debris clouds, while also deploying smaller spacecraft for closer examination before landing on Dimorphos. This close flyby presents risks but offers the potential for valuable data collection.

ESA has expressed its desire to transform DART’s large-scale experiment into a well-understood and potentially repeatable strategy for planetary defense, aiming to safeguard Earth against potential asteroid threats.

“By the end of Hera’s observations, Dimorphos will be the most thoroughly studied asteroid in history,” according to ESA. “This is crucial because should an object of this size collide with Earth, it could obliterate an entire city. The dinosaurs lacked any means of defending against asteroids, as they had no space agency. However, through Hera, we are learning how to lessen this risk and make our celestial neighborhood safer.”

At the September 2024 State of Play event, Sucker Punch Productions unveiled Ghost of Yotei, a sequel to the acclaimed 2020 title Ghost of Tsushima. This new adventure is set to launch on the PlayStation 5 in 2025.

The narrative introduces a fresh female protagonist named Atsu and unfolds in the year 1603, more than 300 years after the original game’s timeline. This installment takes place in the region of Mount Yotei, which is part of what is now known as Hokkaido, Japan. In 1603, this area was not under the governance of Japan and features a diverse landscape that includes both grasslands and tundra. Notably, the story will likely diverge from the organized samurai factions depicted in Ghost of Tsushima, though specific plot details remain under wraps.

Ghost of Yōtei – Announce Trailer | PS5 Games

The announcement trailer features Atsu wearing her ghost mask as she rides through vast open landscapes. During her journey, she encounters a wolf that initially appears menacing. However, after a brief standoff, the wolf retreats in the direction of a strong wind. It remains uncertain if this wolf will play a significant role in the storyline, possibly as a companion.

Ghost of Yotei marks Sucker Punch’s first title specifically designed for the PS5, fully utilizing the console’s advanced technology. Players can expect enhanced sight lines that allow for expansive views of the game world, as well as beautifully detailed night skies adorned with stars and auroras. Furthermore, the developers have teased the inclusion of new gameplay mechanics and weaponry in this upcoming title.

Since his arrival at the ISS for a fourth mission earlier this month, Pettit, who at 69 is the oldest currently active astronaut at NASA, has quickly engaged the station’s cameras to produce and share stunning new visuals taken from 250 miles above our planet.

In his latest update posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday, Pettit showcased a series of stunning, artistic photographs featuring moonlight shimmering over regions of the Amazon basin in South America.

“While photographing cities at night somewhere over the Amazon basin, I observed the light from a nearly-full moon reflecting off the winding rivers of the rainforest,” Pettit detailed in his post, likening the waterways to “flowing silver snakes” and “glowing golden claws.”

Pettit, as usual, shared insights into the equipment and camera settings he used for these shots. For this particular series, he utilized a full-frame Nikon Z9 camera paired with a 200mm lens set to f/2, with a shutter speed of 1/320 seconds, and an ISO of 25600. He noted that he processed the images in Photoshop prior to sharing them.

Alongside his scientific research aboard the ISS, Pettit enjoys utilizing the station’s seven-window Cupola module to capture stunning views of Earth with his Nikon Z9. Recently, he shared a captivating nighttime photograph of London and, in another impressive moment, managed to capture the Polaris Dawn Crew Dragon capsule re-entering Earth’s atmosphere at high speed after a historic five-day mission.

Pettit is scheduled to remain in orbit until March 2025, providing him ample opportunity to create even more remarkable works of art from the cosmos.

OpenAI took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce the rollout of its Advanced Voice feature alongside five new voices for its conversational AI. This feature will be available to Plus and Teams subscribers throughout the week, with Enterprise and Edu users set to gain access next week.

The Advanced Voice feature operates on the GPT-4o model, allowing users to communicate with the chatbot using voice rather than typing. This capability was first introduced during OpenAI’s Spring Update event and underwent beta testing in July with a limited number of ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Now, it’s available to all paying subscribers for experimentation.

In addition to Advanced Voice, OpenAI has introduced five new voices for the chatbot: Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale, which can be accessed in both Standard and Advanced Voice modes. These join the existing voices—Breeze, Juniper, Cove, and Ember. However, OpenAI noted that video and screen sharing will not be available in Advanced Voice mode just yet, with plans to include those features in future updates.

Furthermore, OpenAI is integrating two tools to enhance Advanced Voice capabilities, aligning them more closely with its text-based experience: memory and custom instructions. Initially, Advanced Voice could only reference the current chat’s information. With the memory feature, the AI will be able to retrieve information from past conversations, reducing the need for users to repeat themselves. On the other hand, custom instructions allow users to set parameters for the model’s responses, such as specifying that coding responses be given in Python.

Subscribers to Plus and Teams will receive an in-app notification alerting them when the feature is activated on their account. However, it’s important to note that Advanced Voice is not yet available in the EU, the U.K., Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, or Liechtenstein.

OpenAI is not the only tech company enabling direct voice interactions with AI. This announcement from OpenAI follows closely on the heels of Google’s launch of its Gemini Live to all users, including those on the free tier.

  • Lego Horizon Adventures Comes This November With Sackboy

Lego Horizon Adventures Comes This November With Sackboy

During the State of Play event in September 2024, Sony announced that Lego Horizon Adventures is set to be released on November 14 for PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

Initially unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2024, Lego Horizon Adventures had its PlayStation launch anticipated, but the simultaneous release for PC was a pleasant surprise. The inclusion of the Switch version was unexpected, yet it aligns well with the game’s light-hearted approach to a universe traditionally filled with perilous robotic dinosaurs and apocalyptic themes.

A playful new trailer highlights features from the Digital Deluxe Edition. Pre-orders will provide players with a blue roller coaster customization along with outfits for Aloy, such as the Shadow Stalwart, “Alloy” Aloy, and Banuk Armor costumes. Players can also dress Aloy in ensembles inspired by Ratchet, Rivet, and Sackboy. Pre-orders begin on October 3, and anyone who reserves any edition will unlock the Shield-Weaver outfit in-game.

This marks the first time the Horizon series will appear on a Nintendo platform, expanding its audience reach, particularly among younger gamers. In addition to the single-player experience, Lego Horizon Adventures will feature two-player couch and online co-op gameplay, a common characteristic found in many Lego titles.

Interestingly, Lego Horizon Adventures isn’t the only new installment in the Horizon franchise releasing this year. On October 31, fans can expect a remastered edition of Horizon Zero Dawn, developed by Nixxes for PS5 and PC. Players who already own the original game can upgrade to the remastered version for just $10. With both games launching within a week of one another, it’s an exciting time for fans of the series.
