Unofficial PS5 Action Game Cancelled, Suddenly Resurfaces

A long-lost PS5 action-adventure game that we only caught a fleeting glimpse of in 2023 has unexpectedly resurfaced. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, initially being developed by Black Forest Games under THQ Nordic, was canceled, but somehow the project has persisted.

Last weekend, Paramount Games Studio announced the return of TMNT: The Last Ronin, now described as a dark, mature AAA game. It is being developed by PlatinumGames, the studio behind Nier Automata. A new teaser trailer was released—check it out below:

Regarding the original game’s status, a representative from Paramount Games Studio told Gematsu that the version of The Last Ronin teased in 2023 by THQ Nordic is no longer in development. However, due to the strong fan interest, the company has assigned a different studio to bring the game to life.

This shift may explain why Black Forest Games reportedly laid off half its staff in January 2024—likely around when the original project was halted.

While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, Paramount provided a brief description:

“Based on the popular comic book series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin follows the last surviving Ninja Turtle on a mission of vengeance.”
