Wuchang: Fallen Feathers features many boss fights inspired by Sekiro, which will push you to try different builds and playing styles. Starting with a Flame build armed with the Longsword is a good way to get familiar with the game’s mechanics. The build becomes even more powerful once you get the Flamebringer Longsword. As you play further, the build will become more complex.

Best Skills for a Flame Build in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

The Fiery Embers Spell Enhancement is a must for this build. While you can change your weapons throughout the game and still keep a Flame theme, certain skills in the Impetus Repository are key to making this build work well. First, make sure to select the Fiery Embers node in the skill tree. This increases Burn buildup from spells.

For weapon skills, there are two disciplines emphasizing Flame: one in the Longsword tree and another in the Axe tree. While many weapons give good options, for a Flame-focused build that excels against bosses, the Flamebringer Longsword along with the Flame Temperance passive effect is ideal. Similarly, the Scorn Greataxe and Cinder Dragoncoil axe offer strong options. Dealing Fire damage and causing Burn buildup is the main goal. For the Longsword and Axe, a good tactic is to inflict Burn on enemies first, then switch to a powerful attack like Colossal Smash to trigger an explosive Fire burst underneath. This straightforward approach can melt many bosses faster than other builds.

Keep in mind: not every boss is weak to Fire, so you might need to switch to a different approach in specific fights. But for most enemies and especially in the Cloudspire area, Fire damage is a strong choice.

By focusing on inflicting Burn and maximizing Fire effects, you’ll create a build that’s both aggressive and efficient in combat. This strategy allows for quick, explosive victory against most foes, making your Flame build a highly effective and exciting way to play in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has many tough boss battles, and one of the most annoying to face in the middle of the game is Mistress of the Night Huang Yan. She’s frustrating mainly because she moves around a lot, making it difficult to get close and deal real damage. Luckily, there are some tricks that can help you beat her.

The bosses in Wuchang are a big reason the game feels so much like classic Soulsborne games, with tough fights that remind players of Sekiro or Dark Souls. Each battle requires you to adapt and stay persistent if you want to win, and Huang Yan is a perfect example of this challenge.

Where to Find Mistress of the Night Huang Yan

You can find Huang Yan in the Cloudspire area. First, you’ll need to travel through the Rebel Camp, defeat General Ai Nengqi and Ming General Liu Cheng’en at Snowpeak Pass, and you’ll finally arrive in Cloudspire City.

Once there, you’ll navigate through the city, which is full of hidden corners and enemies that can surprise you from behind or push you off ledges. You’ll reach a large plaza where you can activate the Snowfall Palace shrine. Looking straight ahead, there’s a staircase leading up to the main hall of the palace, and there are useful items on both floors. The boss, Huang Yan, is located just to the right of the staircase, behind the middle curtains in an arena accessed via a hallway called the “Treasure Trove.” You can get there by taking the elevator down after talking to a helpful citizen.

How to Prepare for the Fight

A good armor set to use is one that offers strong resistances to Corruption and Frostbite. The Palace Maid’s set is a solid choice because you can often get it by defeating palace maid enemies throughout Snowfall Palace. The Satin Dress or Junior Maid’s Garments are decent options, but anything with high resistances to these effects will help.

Best Strategies for Beating Huang Yan

Many players choose different weapons and builds, but one effective setup is a Flamebringer Longsword combined with the Flame Bone Needle and Crescent Moon Discipline. This build maximizes Burn damage, which Huang Yan is weak against.

Alternatively, building around fire damage with various weapons works well, too. The key is to position yourself for powerful charged backstabs, which can knock her down, giving you a chance to land an instant obliteration attack. Also, consider using consumables like Kong Wine or Sapphire Lotus Seeds to reduce Frostbite from her spells.

How to Beat Her

When the fight begins, Huang Yan usually teleports to different spots on the arena. She often casts Corruption spells—launching orb projectiles that you must dodge. She also has melee attacks and spells involving Corruption and Frostbite, which you should avoid carefully.

Some spells to watch out for:

• When she puffs her pipe and rings a charm, she’ll wave her lantern and send out two waves of Corruption balls. Dodge sideways and attack her from behind afterward.
• A sudden explosion may follow, which can be deadly if you’re nearby.
• She’ll also throw a Corruption orb into the air; it will shoot smaller orbs that home in on you until it dissipates.

She also breathes Frostbite in front of her and can attack with kicks that can’t be blocked. At times, she deflects your attacks with her pipe, so be patient and watch her movements.

When She Transforms

At about half health, Huang Yan will turn into a flying snow fox, rushing at you quickly and dealing Frostbite damage. She’ll switch between human and fox forms multiple times. She’ll surround herself with ice clouds, signaling when she’s about to change.

In the second stage, besides dodging her swift Fox attacks, you can also hit her from behind with spells like Echo of Dhutanga to knock her down for a big attack. Using fire-based weapons and circling behind her during spell casting creates perfect opportunities to land heavy hits and knock her prone, which is a great way to finish her off.

Final Tips

Once you learn her attack patterns and spell cues, she’s not so hard to beat. Timing your dodges and circling behind her makes her vulnerable, especially during her spell casts when she’s less mobile. With patience and practice, you can overcome one of the trickiest bosses in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and claim victory.

While many bosses in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers are tough, General Liu Cheng’en is a real challenge that tests your skills. He’s probably the hardest boss you’ve faced so far, and you might find him even tougher than Commander Honglan was at first.

Liu Cheng’en is very similar to some of the difficult bosses from the game Sekiro, made by the same creators of FromSoftware’s popular 2019 game, GOTY winner. Just like those bosses, you can beat him once you get the hang of dodging, blocking, and deflecting attacks.

Where to Find General Liu Cheng’en in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

You’ll find Liu Cheng’en about halfway through the Cloudspire area. To get to him, you need to pass through the Rebel Camp and defeat the General of the North, Ai Nengqi. You’ll find Liu Cheng’en after crossing a bridge headed toward Cloudspire City, near the Cloudspire Outskirts shrine.

There’s a gate at the bottom of the hill that needs to be opened before the fight, so be sure to unlock it first. Also, gear up before crossing the bridge, as you’ll encounter snow traps and Frostbite hazards along the way. Watch your step as you climb the hill and approach the boss.

How to Prepare for Liu Cheng’en

The best armor to wear against him is the Overseer’s set because it offers strong resistance to Frostbite and stabbing attacks, which are his main weapons. Besides armor, bring plenty of Frostbite-reducing items like Sapphire Lotus Seeds, Kong Wine, or Everblend Brew.

For weapons, a flame-based build works well. Using the Flamebringer Longsword and flame spells can give you an edge. Make sure to incorporate the Sword Counter skill to handle his spear and stabbing moves effectively.

Another good strategy is a Leech build with Twin Bandits Dual Blades. This setup uses the Blademaster Discipline and Leech Temperance Bone Needle, which you can unlock in the game. The Block skill on Twin Bandits, combined with Clash effects from the Discipline, will help you counter his stabbing and slashing attacks. The Leech effect will also help keep your health up during the fight.

How to Beat General Liu Cheng’en

In the fight, Liu Cheng’en starts with a spear, jumping into heavy plunging attacks. Timing your dodge is key to avoiding damage. You can circle behind him for a powerful backstab and use deflections or blocks to counter his lunges. However, his stomping moves cannot be blocked, so dodge those.

He will also summon a Frostbite whirlwind attack, which damages and slows you. Stand outside the attack radius to stay safe. When he does this move, you’ll lose lock-on, so face him carefully until you can lock on again. After losing lock, be ready for a quick series of jumps and attacks.

When his health drops to around half, he switches to a sword, bringing new melee attacks. Watch for overhead sword swings in a three-part combo and direct stabbing attacks—these are deflectable. Avoid his punching and stomping moves with well-timed dodges, since they can’t be blocked.

During the battle, he may throw Frostbite daggers that can be dodged or deflected. Later, he might unleash a Frostbite whirlwind with an ice explosion at the end—stay away from the blast radius to avoid instant death. Waiting for his jump attacks and blocking or dodging will help you build Skyborn Might stacks for counterattacks.

Dying a few times is common, especially at first, because the fight is very demanding. The climb and approach can also become frustrating, but persistence will pay off. Eventually, you’ll defeat him and move forward in the story of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

The first big hurdle in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers occurs at the end of Worship’s Rise, when you face Commander Honglan. She is a tough boss with a confusing move set that tests your skills more than any enemy you’ve fought before. In earlier fights, dodging and trying different tactics might have worked, but against Honglan, you need to master the Deflect and/or Block mechanics if you want to win.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is expected to be one of the standout games of 2025, mainly because it’s inspired by Dark Souls and Sekiro. Its gameplay appeals to players who enjoy a challenging experience that other similar games don’t quite deliver. If you’re experienced with Sekiro or Dark Souls, this boss might feel a bit easier, but it still serves as good practice for the tougher bosses to come.

Where to Find Commander Honglan in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

Honglan is the final boss of the first area in the game. You can find her once you reach the Lotus Pond area, which is in Worship’s Rise.

While she might seem incredibly difficult, she’s not the hardest boss in the later stages of the game. Honglan is the last main boss of the starting region, and you’ll encounter her once you reach the Lotus Pond.

It’s wise to go into this fight well-prepared by exploring Worship’s Rise thoroughly and leveling up your character. Optimizing your build using the Impetus Repository is crucial, especially investing in skills like Deflect or Block to counter Honglan’s sword attacks.

To reach the arena, you’ll need to find the Buddha Statue and place it on the pedestal near the Plain Warrioress. The statue is close to the stand, and stairs lead straight to it. Once placed, an area opens up for the fight against Honglan.

How to Prepare for Commander Honglan

The best approach is to use a build that includes Poise Break or a dual blades setup with Leech damage, especially if healing is a concern. Many build options can work—your choice depends on your play style. Since you have the Lashing Whip, which pairs well with Poise Break Temperance, that’s probably your best choice. The Vermillion War Club is a good secondary weapon if you have it.

A key tip is to include a Block or Deflect skill in your build. Honglan’s attacks are similar to those of challenging Sekiro bosses. Focusing on a Longsword with the Sword Counter skill and investing in Feathering nodes to boost the Echo of Lu Bingzhang spell works well. The strategy involves deflecting her slashes and stab attacks and hitting her with the Echo of Lu when there’s enough space.

How to Defeat Commander Honglan

Knowing which attacks to dodge and which to deflect is essential. At the start of the fight, Honglan will lunge forward with a stab attack. When you recognize this move, you can deflect or dodge it. Counter in the moment by hitting her with a heavy attack from behind—this can give you an Obliterate opportunity, which is a big damage window.

Honglan uses several stabbing and slashing moves, and she’ll throw daggers that are easy to dodge, especially to build Skyborn Might stacks. She also performs a leg kick and stomp that can’t be deflected, so dodging is best here. She’ll sometimes throw punches that are also unblockable. When that happens, it’s safest to dodge back and create some space.

When her health drops to about half, she becomes more aggressive, pulling out a second sword and launching energy waves from her blade. These waves must be dodged carefully—especially the wide horizontal one, which can be deadly. Using Poise Break Temperance, you’ll have many chances to land critical hits during her energy attacks.

To finish her off, best strategies include deflecting her moves and countering with well-timed attacks when she’s vulnerable. With practice, you’ll find that mastering deflection and knowing when to dodge makes this fight much more manageable.

After defeating Honglan, a cutscene plays, and you’ll earn some good loot. I won’t spoil the details, but once you get her down, future fights will become easier as you improve your skills and build strategies.
