Sony Confirms Discontinuation of PlayStation Discs

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that they will cease producing PlayStation discs beginning in January 2028, marking a major shift in their distribution approach. The company, known for supporting physical media for years, attributed this change to evolving consumer preferences and industry trends.

As the entertainment sector continues to favor digital over physical formats, Sony confirmed that starting in 2028, all new PlayStation titles will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and retail digital channels. This change will not affect games already released or those scheduled to launch before the cutoff date in physical form.

Speculation suggests that the next console, the PS6, might arrive without a disc drive altogether, especially given this announcement. If that’s the case, questions arise about the future of existing PS5 discs—since the PS5 is compatible with PS4 discs, transitioning from last generation to current was relatively seamless, but the move away from physical media could complicate things down the line.

Sony emphasizes that this move aligns with broader industry trends, noting that digital media consumption now far exceeds physical disc sales. They also highlighted that this shift will help them better meet the preferences of their gaming community and adapt to a changing entertainment landscape.
