A new first-person shooter set in a Western apocalypse has been announced for the PS5, developed by a legendary figure in the gaming world. The game, titled Guns of Eschaton, blends Western themes with Soulslike gameplay elements in a mystical setting. Publisher 4Divinity and developer Esschatology Entertainment revealed that the project was crafted with the late Viktor Antonov, renowned for his work on Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, who passed away last year.
Guns of Eschaton will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, though an exact release date has not yet been disclosed. The game immerses players in a post-apocalyptic Western landscape where survival hinges on studying foes, managing ammunition, and forging a unique combat style powered by gunpowder and faith. Whether playing solo or cooperatively, players are encouraged to “go West, gunslinger, go West—and die with the country.”
A trailer for Guns of Eschaton is available for viewing below:
Described as a first-person Soulslike shooter set in a devastated Western world, Guns of Eschaton takes place in a wasteland defined by dust, blood, false saints, fractured history, and mystical horror. The narrative suggests a bleak journey toward salvation, paved with spent cartridges and bodies that seem to remember the player’s name.
The game promises a diverse arsenal of over 20 weapons modeled after 19th-century firearms, each with its own personality—difficult to master, but rewarding. Players can customize their playstyle through a robust system that includes adjustable bullets, armor, consumables, and abilities across three mystical paths. Notable features include:
- Weapons: Wield over 20 firearms inspired by the brutal, limited technology of the 1800s. Each weapon has its unique quirks and if not mastered, can be deadly.
- Builds: Shape your combat style using active and passive skills, custom ammunition, talismans, armor, and the powers gained from three mystical paths. Learn tactics from legendary gunslingers to fight on your own terms.
- Bullets: Select the appropriate ammo for specific enemies, treating your revolver’s cylinder as a tactical resource—planning your shots carefully.
- Companions and Multiplayer: The game supports full solo and co-op campaigns, allowing for story-driven experiences or PvP battles where you can challenge other players and make their journey even harder.
- Factions: The adversaries you encounter stem from warped mythologies, all transformed by the apocalypse.
- Occult Western Setting: The Wild West has fallen into a mystical and spiritual chaos called “The Burning,” where ancient forces and impossible myths reshape reality across destroyed towns and forgotten frontiers.
- Codex System: Use a hand-drawn Cherokee Codex to analyze enemies, discover their vulnerabilities, rituals, and hidden rules—turning lore into your weapon.
This combination of mystical Western aesthetics, dark lore, and challenging combat mechanics promises a fresh take on the genre.
