OpenAI announced the release of ChatGPT Work on Thursday, a new feature integrated into its widely-used chatbot that can handle tasks across various applications and files, marking a significant step in workplace automation for the company.
Powered by OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-5.6, ChatGPT Work can process context from different apps, documents, and workflows to produce complete outputs like reports, spreadsheets, presentations, websites, and more.
This launch highlights the growing rivalry among tech firms to develop and market AI tools tailored for professional environments, as demand rises for autonomous agents capable of completing complex tasks with minimal human intervention.
Prior to this, OpenAI’s suite of agent-based solutions included Operator and advanced research tools, which were later combined into the ChatGPT Agent for individual users, along with Workspace Agents designed for enterprise workflow automation.
The new ChatGPT Work comes several months after Anthropic, a competitor, expanded its enterprise offerings with Claude Cowork—an agent that can plan and execute multi-step tasks independently. Early this year, Anthropic also introduced plugins for Claude Cowork to automate functions in legal, sales, marketing, and data analysis sectors. This move caused a notable drop in tech stocks across the U.S. and Europe due to fears of AI disrupting data analytics markets.
Following Anthropic, Microsoft—an investor in OpenAI—unveiled Copilot Cowork, further extending its AI agent capabilities.
In addition, OpenAI announced a new desktop version of ChatGPT and a website-building feature that allows users to create and share sites directly through ChatGPT Work.
The rollout will begin Thursday for web and mobile platforms, starting with Pro, Enterprise, and Education users, and will soon expand to Plus and Business users over the following days.
