4A Games’ upcoming installment in the Metro series plunges players into a tense “hunter versus hunted” scenario, as Metro 2039 explores a post-apocalyptic Moscow filled with numerous threats to evade or eliminate. A four-hour demo showcased at Gamescom 2026 provides a clearer picture of the survival mechanics ahead of its February 2027 launch.
The Gamescom demo emphasizes nerve-wracking gameplay over the narrative. It begins with the protagonist, known as the Stranger, embarking on a mission to locate a henchman named Kaban at a bandit camp. Kaban is an operative working for the game’s main antagonist, Hunter.
A digital watch plays a crucial role during exploration, allowing players to monitor radiation filter levels in the game’s open-world segments. The watch emits periodic beeps, signaling how much time remains before hazards become deadly—adding to the game’s tense atmosphere.
The gameplay reveal highlights the use of a diegetic user interface and weapon handling without a crosshair, enhancing the feeling of anxiety and immersion. The demo also introduced a crafting system, where players can use metal and chemicals to create bullets and replenish gas mask filters, emphasizing resource management with limited supplies.
Resource gathering remains essential as players traverse Moscow’s devastated landscape. From previews, it’s known that a section of the demo takes place at a bandit camp, featuring an encounter with Nosalis, a recurring enemy type in series entries like Metro Exodus.
Players will have choices—avoid confrontations altogether, stealthily take down enemies, or fight head-on with guns blazing. However, engaging in combat requires careful resource management, as depleting supplies can be costly.
This combination of resource management, constant watch-checking, and lurking threats encapsulates the feeling of being hunted and reinforces that Metro 2039 will be the darkest entry yet. The developers have also indicated that the story’s darker tone was influenced by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, promising an intense and emotionally charged experience for players when it releases next year.
