Metro 2039 Developers Reveal War's Impact on Darker Story Direction

The Ukrainian game studio 4A Games, renowned for the highly praised Metro series, is set to release its most intense installment yet, titled Metro 2039, next year. With previews now available, developers have shared insights into how the Russia-Ukraine conflict that began in 2022 influenced the game’s development, steering the narrative into much darker territory.

In an interview with IGN, the creative director of Metro 2039 explained that the war’s impact was felt across every aspect of the project, starting with the team itself, then shaping the storyline, and ultimately affecting gameplay mechanics. He emphasized, “First of all, it’s impacted the team.”

He elaborated, “The world changes the team entirely — their mindset, their perspectives, and their understanding of what’s happening around them. As a result, it naturally introduces new visions and philosophies into the game through the team.”

An executive producer added that the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia forced them to rethink their narrative approach. “When Russia launched its full invasion of Ukraine, war came directly to our doorstep, and we had to adapt the kind of story we wanted to tell. We aimed to depict the consequences of war — what happens when conflict invades your life,” he said.

He noted that the shift toward a darker story marked a significant departure from their previous development plans, with most changes happening overnight due to the war. Audio lead Pavel Ulmer further revealed that the series’ connection to reality grew stronger because of the ongoing conflict, which led them to steer Metro 2039’s story toward a bleaker tone.

Following the more optimistic ending of Metro Exodus, fans might expect the sequel to expand on themes of hope amid a post-apocalyptic landscape. However, Metro 2039 takes a markedly different route.

The game is scheduled for release in February 2027, with 4A Games leading the development and Deep Silver handling publishing duties. Remarkably, Metro 2039 reached over 1 million wishlists quickly—shattering previous records for the series—even before Gamescom 2026, indicating strong anticipation among fans for this first-person shooter.
