A key lesson I’ve picked up while traveling is that you can never be certain where your next device charge will come from. That’s why I always pack a portable power strip, whether I’m on vacation or on a business trip.
For around $20, it provides a cost-effective sense of security: a compact four-outlet power strip equipped with USB-A and USB-C ports, plus a four-foot cable that coils neatly around the unit when not in use.
More often than not, hotel outlets are tucked behind beds, malfunctioning desk sockets, or there’s only a single outlet for multiple devices.
About twenty years ago, Monster (remember them?) held a CES conference unveiling sleek, high-end HDMI cables and audio gear. Unexpectedly, they also showcased a travel power strip.
At first, I thought, This has to be the most pointless thing ever. But their PR team convinced me to give it a shot. I kept using it repeatedly on that trip and subsequent ones until it eventually wore out.
I finally settled on the Orico power strip because I appreciated its design and weight. It measures roughly 1.6 inches in thickness, making it somewhat bulky, but it occupies about the same space as a smartphone. The four-foot cord wraps snugly around the device and can be secured with the included elastic strap. Its angled 45-degree plug folds into itself for easy storage.
The power strip is rated for 1,250W, suitable for most laptops, which typically draw about 100W. It features two three-prong outlets, two two-prong outlets, two USB-A ports, and a USB-C port delivering 15W, ideal for fast-charging newer smartphones. For higher wattage needs, there’s an upgraded version with increased power output available for $31, though it offers fewer electrical outlets.
A notable aspect is that this model doesn’t include surge protection—either a pro or a con. Surge protectors are often prohibited on cruise ships due to their electrical systems, but if you’re traveling to storm-prone regions, an additional surge protector like the $13 One Beat model might be worthwhile, despite being bulkier and lacking a wrapping cord.
The color scheme is another plus. I chose blue to stand out, as many tech accessories are only black or white. A splash of color makes it easier to locate in a crowded backpack or bag. It’s available in white, black, blue, and lilac, and importantly, it doesn’t have a power indicator light that might disrupt your sleep.
Overall, I consider this device essential for mobile work. Plus, currently, Amazon is offering a 10% discount!
