Housemarque co-founder has left the PlayStation Studios family after 31 years. In his farewell message, he shared a heartfelt note with fans, celebrating his legacy at Housemarque and expressing his gratitude.
On August 31, 2026, Housemarque announced the departure of Ilari Kuittinen, who also served as managing director. In his statement, he said, “After 33 years in the gaming industry and 31 incredible years at Housemarque—the studio I co-founded with Harri Tikkanen—today marks my last day with the company.”
He recounted, “Starting in 1993 with Terramarque, and later teaming up with Harri to create Housemarque in 1995, our passion for games drove us, even though we didn’t have a clear business plan. Looking back, I feel deeply grateful.”
Kuittinen reflected on how the studio benefited from being in the right place at the right time, enabling it to stay independent for 26 years before becoming part of PlayStation Studios.
He also shared his thoughts on leadership, stating, “My main goal as a leader has always been to create an environment where talented creators can freely do their best, with the support and protection they need.”
Before ending his message, he thanked his colleagues, saying, “Thank you for making these past 31 years the experience of a lifetime. Remember our guiding principles: strive to grow professionally and personally. Care for one another, be brave in your conversations, and continue pushing the limits of what games can be. Here’s to the next chapter!”
### Sami Hakala Takes the Reins as Housemarque Begins a New Chapter
Sami Hakala will succeed Kuittinen as the studio’s new managing director. In his announcement, Kuittinen mentioned that the decision to step down was part of a planned transition. Hakala officially assumed the role on July 1 of this year.
Kuittinen added, “I’ve been supporting him and the leadership team through the end of this month to ensure a smooth transition. Housemarque’s strategic direction and creative ambitions are in excellent hands.”
Hakala is a seasoned Finnish video game executive, producer, and director, known for his work on acclaimed titles like Resogun, Nex Machina, and Returnal.
Though Kuittinen is stepping away from his CEO role, he plans to stay connected to the industry by attending events, and in the future, he may serve as a mentor or consultant.
