Type 2 diabetes has become a significant public health issue worldwide.
This condition impacts hundreds of millions of individuals and raises their risk of heart disease, kidney failure, vision problems, and other severe health complications.
While maintaining a healthy diet and staying active are well-known ways to lower risk, researchers continue exploring other factors that might play a role in prevention.
An increasing number of scientists believe that where people live can influence their health outcomes. Access to trees, gardens, and parks has already been associated with improved mental health, reduced stress, and increased physical activity. A new study indicates these green spaces may also reduce the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.
Researchers from the University of Queensland analyzed health data from over 19,000 participants in the UK Biobank, comparing diabetes prevalence to the amount of green space surrounding each individual’s home.
The study examined two main aspects of green space. One was whether participants had a sizeable garden at their residence. The other was the number of parks within approximately half a mile (800 meters) of their homes.
Results showed that individuals with home gardens had a 6.8% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those without gardens. Additionally, living near several parks was associated with a 5.7% reduction in risk.
Lead researcher Dr. Chinonso Odebeatu emphasized that these findings suggest green spaces should be regarded as vital public health assets rather than just aesthetically pleasing neighborhood features. As urban areas become increasingly crowded, urban planning decisions could have lasting impacts on public health for generations to come.
Several reasons might explain how gardens and parks promote better health. Gardening involves regular physical activity, and proximity to parks makes walking, jogging, sports, or simply spending time outdoors more accessible.
Time spent in natural environments may also promote relaxation and decrease stress, which are known to influence blood sugar levels and overall well-being. Exposure to sunlight can help boost vitamin D production, and interaction with natural surroundings might support healthy gut bacteria and immune function.
The study authors caution that their findings do not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between green spaces and diabetes prevention. People living near parks or maintaining gardens might also engage in other health-promoting behaviors that were not fully captured in the research.
Nevertheless, the results contribute to a growing body of evidence suggesting that healthier neighborhoods can support healthier lives. Small urban design modifications, such as safeguarding green spaces and developing community gardens, could offer broad benefits beyond recreation alone.
This research was published in BMC Public Health. The authors hope their findings motivate policymakers, urban planners, and developers to incorporate more accessible green areas into future housing developments.
Overall, the study offers fresh insights into diabetes prevention strategies. Its large sample size enhances the strength of the findings, though the observational nature of the research means it cannot definitively prove causality.
Further research is necessary to determine whether creating new parks or gardens can directly lower diabetes risk. Still, the evidence suggests that investing in greener communities could be an effective way to promote physical and mental health while addressing the rising challenge of type 2 diabetes.
