Google Profiles Reject Repeated Bilingual Names and Script Transliterations

Google has updated its guidelines for representing businesses on Google Business Profiles, introducing a new rule regarding business names. The platform now states that businesses cannot list the same name in multiple scripts or languages. This update is found within the “name” section of the guidelines under the heading “Repeated Bilingual Names / Script Transliterations,” and it emphasizes that such practices are not permitted.

Google clarified that businesses are not allowed to have the same name repeated in various scripts or languages, even if the different versions are displayed on physical storefront signage. For example, using representations like “Kafiex / カフィエクス” or “Burger King バーガーキング” is considered unacceptable.

Conversely, using a single script for a business name remains acceptable. The policy applies broadly, especially in regions where multiple scripts are common, such as areas utilizing English alongside Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, or others. Notably, Google explicitly states that dual-script names are not permitted even if they appear on the storefront signage itself. This clarifies that relying on images of physical signs to justify bilingual naming in profiles is no longer valid.

As violations related to business names are a frequent cause of profile suspensions, it’s advisable for business owners and managers to review their listings. Ensuring that the business name adheres to this single-script requirement can help avoid potential issues.
