Developer Frogwares has finally launched its long-awaited survival horror RPG on PS5. The Sinking City 2 is now accessible through the PlayStation Store, nearly seven years after the original game debuted on earlier consoles. This sequel continues the detective-themed, semi-open-world gameplay set in 1920s Arkham.
Unlike its predecessor, The Sinking City 2 offers a more streamlined and intense experience, based on current reviews. Players assume the role of Calvin Rafferty, who must navigate the dark, foreboding streets of Arkham to wake his comatose partner.
Throughout the journey, Rafferty faces undead creatures possessed by the Slither. The game’s linear structure includes optional objectives and alternate routes that can simplify the main storyline.
Critics’ Impressions of The Sinking City 2
As of now, the game holds a 79 on Metacritic, based on 33 reviews. Compared to the reception of the first installment, the sequel is seen as an improvement for Frogwares. Reviewers have appreciated its suspenseful atmosphere, compelling storytelling, and detective mechanics. The technical aspects and ambition of the game have also been praised.
DualShockers described it as “an absolute triumph,” highlighting Frogwares’ effort to craft a complete survival horror experience. Indigo Geek commended the game’s successful capture of H.P. Lovecraft’s cosmic dread. However, not all reviews were glowing.
The Guardian criticized the combat system, noting that it “undermines the detailed map design by offering no motivation to utilize shortcuts.” The review also pointed out the dialogue as “overwrought” and the acting as stiff.
The game is available in three editions for PS5. The Standard edition costs $49.99, while the Deluxe and Premium editions are priced at $54.99 and $59.99. The Deluxe version includes the Arkham Field Kit, and the Premium adds the side mission titled The Holloway Manor.
